Another prominent feature of focus group discussions, is the presence of a facilitator, whose key responsibility is to manage the discussion whereas, he or she is also suppose to keep the ongoing discussion relevant to the intended topic. The technique of focus group is basically used in order to gather information that an ordinary quantitative survey cannot quantify. The featured research methodology is also considered an ideal approach for getting an idea of ongoing perceptional activities in individuals because, humans have an ability to give some physical indication when different sorts of emotions, thoughts and feelings go through their minds (Kitzinger, 1995).
These physical indications help facilitator in judging the mental condition of the respondents and participants. The target focus group discussion has been conducted, in order to gather and analyze the opinions of parents regarding increasing violence in the American society. Yet, the focus of the featured discussion was kept on youth’s increasing ability to commit mass killings with the help of dangerous weaponry such as handguns, rifles and other similar means. Analysis of the Case The case has been developed by inviting eleven parents, whose children are currently attending college but only nine of them showed up at a local cafe where, the focus group meeting took place.
The discussion was moderated by an experienced facilitator. The focal point of the entire session remained at analyzing key reasons of growing number of shooting incidents while, it was also discussed that how the youngsters are getting highly motivated towards committing mass public homicides. The participants firstly noted that media is primarily responsible for all this because, channels are increasingly engaged in exaggerating about shootings though in reality these painful events are rare and isolated.
The parents also added that their children are use to watching TV excessively and therefore they are getting bombarded with unhealthy and violent crime scene photos and videos. This uncensored content is primarily responsible for cultivating violent mindset in the youngsters. Secondly, the participants continued to blame governmental and law enforcement bodies that in their view have failed to control arms trafficking and sales, which caused dangerous weapons to end up in the hands of youngsters.
The parents also wondered about how and where these children learn to fire lethal weapons. Thirdly, few of the parents do not blame weapons and their illegal transportation and sales for causing bloodshed on the streets. Contrarily, they identified a violent mindset as the primal cause of shooting mishaps. Fourthly, the focus group discussion, recommended that parents should keep a close eye on their children favorite content on the TV. They are also supposed to teach children about potential societal disadvantages of violence and its means.
The parents are also encouraged to make the children learn the value of human life, so that juniors must think before taking one’s life. Sixthly, the parents told that government alone cannot control and manage street killings unless public really act towards eliminating violent way of thinking from the society. The
