Social media: Texting Due Introduction Sending text messages is a trending that has been growing in the area of communication. In essence, sending messages has become a norm in the society generating a number of effects on the lives of many people. In this case, text messaging has both negative and positive effects. Due to the nature of texting that is taking global shape, it is important to establish the impact on texting on other functions and operations in life. As such, this paper seeks to establish what is the impact of texting on driving? Essentially, send a text message during driving exposes both the driver and occupant of the vehicle to injuries and fatalities. In fact, the potential danger or harm of sending text messages when the driver is behind the wheel comes due to visual and cognitive impairment. Secondly, this paper seeks to establish the existing relationship between consistent use of text message as a form of communication and the general development of language. Essentially, we seek to find out how text message leads or are connected to impaired language use in the USA. Language development is a process that relies on practice and communication. On the other hand, consistent use of text message leads to the impairment of these skills resulting in the impairment of language. Thirdly, this paper seeks to establish whether the nonverbal communication provides a necessary tool for acquiring and developing healthy attachments. Verbal communication is a vital tool for acquiring necessary attachments in life. However, the introduction of text messaging as a form of communication raises the question on the necessity of using this approach in developing healthy attachments. Junco and Cotton (2010) contend that today’s generation uses communication technologies more than any other generation. Consequently, this has limited the interactions among people across all the ages. Texting limits people’s relations with family and friends by interrupting family time such that parents and the children are no longer connected anymore. Electronic multitasking has become pervasive, sometimes at the expense of face to face family interactions among parents and siblings. It is worth noting that instant messaging can be advantageous as well as disadvantageous. An example is in a school setting where texting can be used in giving students information about upcoming events. However according to Papandrea (2010), parents and school officials should monitor student’s texting and limit usage of the cell phones. Excessive texting can lead to poor performance, poor sleeping habits, bullying through text messaging as well as sexting. It can later impact the overall lifestyle of the individual. Historical background How text messaging has become popular The concept of text messaging service came into existence in the 1980s. However, the concept did not gain access to the public domain until 1992, a year when the first message was ever sent. The actual date when the first text message was sent is December 3, 1992. Due to the technological advancements, the service started to gain popularity in the mid-1990s. The number of text messages sent by users started to rise as people, and mobile phone companies started to develop various versions of text messaging service. By the year 2000, the number of text messages sent had dramatically increased. There was a massive increase in text message traffic between 2000 and 2001. For instance, the year 2000 witnessed approximately 17 billion text messages had come into existence. The following year in 2001, the number grew rapidly from 17 billion to 250 billion sent messages. Rapid technological adaptations have widely contributed to the massive growth in this service. Other factors contributing to this rapid rise includes affordability of the mobile phones, affordability of the phones, and the ever-changing lifestyles. In 2000s, text messaging was available for most models of cell gadgets. This feature saw a remarkable growth and increase in the number of people using the service. In 2002 text messaging exploded and more than 250 billion SMS were sent worldwide. Later on according to Cellular Telecommunications industry association survey in 2009 1.5 trillion text messages were sent; this means that more than 200 messages for every person on earth. Due to the collapse of traditional methods of communication scholars have been triggered to research to ascertain the effects of social media on people’s lives. Therefore, texting could be a way of wanting to identify with the members of an individual group. Discernable trends and future directions Parents, Teachers, and even social workers need to comprehend the effects of texting in individuals especially the children and adolescents fully. Understanding this, prepares them to guide the young generation over the proper use of instant messaging. It is paramount for social workers to comprehend how big a role texting plays in the lives of adolescents. Texting could also help in a quick distribution of information to a large number of people within a very short time. Creating awareness, therefore, enables social workers and even parents to familiarize with challenges that adolescent face especially regarding their communication skills. Many of them have grown up well aware of public knowledge because of the expansion of technology –based communication. This research also provides scope for further research in future which will be beneficial to understanding of the exploitative impacts of texting as well as the benefits that accompany instant messaging. Since it is evident that texting has more disadvantages than advantages, future research will greatly aid in curbing some of these adverse effects. Parents and children also will be in a better position to adjust to texting changes and decipher the way forward. Conclusion Texting has had an impact to people in the past and present generation. It impacts peoples communication skills in many ways. Texting can be a helpful tool in emergency occasions and can be detrimental to developing social skills.
