Deaf reading reaction #3 I liked this article by Watson “Raising and Educating a Deaf Child” in trying to formulate an argument about the role played by sign language. Even though it bases arguments from a historical perspective about the development of sign language, it can easily correlate with the present moment and be applied in teaching of deaf students. The thesis statement is extremely elaborate as it enlightens on the need to learn and carefully use sign language.
This historical highlight shows that sign language has been in existence for a long time. However, sign language has undergone several changes, which have led, to it being formally accepted as a means of communication. However, I do not agree with certain aspects as highlighted by Watson. For instance, by mentioning that sign language was not an equivalent to English and that it was equivalent to a ‘rude and imperfect’ speech which is barbarous, I feel aggrieved since there are many deaf and dumb people in the society today who benefit from it. Therefore, had it been phased out, a lot of people would have been disadvantaged significantly.
Discussing this article along the perspectives of deaf babies brings redefines the whole topic. Through this and the babies’ growth cycle of speech, I have learnt a lot that has totally changed my views and would be glad to read more in the related topic area probably by the same author. In spite of the author’s choice of words some time being technical and might not be understood by all, the topic is elaborately discussed. I would recommend this article for reading to everyone as it is immensely educative.
