Full Paper Executive Summary We have designed Mr. Smith’s computer network with the most optimal and up-to technological settings that will not only provide undisrupted Internet connectivity but will also mitigate risks that may exploit vulnerabilities for a home Internet user. We have utilized CAT 5e cables that will support gigabit Ethernet, using cable modem that is the fastest and affordable solution capable to run television services such as Netflix and Hulu plus services. Star topology is utilized in the networking proposal. Benefits and features of DNS for your server, (n.d) Moreover, we have discussed DNS settings along with virtual LAN’s and DHCP that can prevent the network from Denial of Service attacks and other vulnerabilities, hence, making the Internet operational at all times. Network Analysis The network architecture is demonstrated showing connectivity of workstations, printers and switches within each room. Workstation located in living room is linked by an Ethernet switch that is connected to the Internet router or cable modem. The study room is also linked with another switch that is connected to the Internet router or cable modem. The server room architecture consists of servers, printers and switches. Printer is connected by a separate IP address. Moreover, the architecture consists of 24 Ethernet ports that are altogether connected with a separate switch terminating on another switch. The data transmission of this wired architecture is constructed on CAT 5e support gigabit Ethernet speeds. Switches are not considered as intelligent devices. However, layer 3 switches have a capability of configuring multiple virtual local area networks. Normal Ethernet switch do not have configuration capability, whereas, layer 3 or manageable switch has the capability of configuring multiple VLAN (Ethernet switch.2011). As per network dictionary, VLAN is defined as a concept of a logical network consisting of collection of devices related to one or more local area network connected to each other. However they are attacked to several local area network segments Virtual LAN. We have to consider Information technology as a facilitator and automation sector to improve and support business functions effectively. It is vital for the computer network to align network configuration and services according to the business requirements and that may not create a conflict that may ultimately impact on business operations. Static IP address is a configuration of fixed IP address on the workstation or laptop. For instance, laptop or workstation A and workstation B both share a different IP address in order to communicate via network. Likewise, static IP addressing scheme address some issues that will restrict the workstation to a single subnet. If there is a requirement for connecting the workstation or laptop to another subnet, configuration is required. Moreover, this scheme also uses more resources because if the laptop or workstation is powered on, broadcasting is active that may consume unnecessary bandwidth and network utilization. Furthermore, if location of the workstation moves from one room to another that is running on different subnet, IP addresses configuration is again required, in order to configure the workstation on the network. There is a requirement for addressing these limitations because in this information age, networks are large and complex and application associated with it also requires flexibility for integration Snedaker, S., Shinder, D. L., & Shinder, T. W. (2004). In order to cope up with the challenges of configuring IP address again and again, dynamic host configuration protocol (DHCP) served the purpose. DHCP is a simple protocol that is operational on port 67 and 68 of User Datagram Protocol (UDP) (Hunt, 2002). The primary purpose of this protocol is to configure all the TCP/IP settings on the client side without the intervention of human efforts. Under the heading of ‘Requirements for Internet hosts’ mentioned in the RFC also defines that configuration associated with TCP/IP is achievable via DHCP server (Hunt, 2002). Moreover, DHCP assign IP addresses randomly within a specific range or pool of IP addresses defined by the user in the DHCP server configuration. IP lease can also be configured for using the IP address for a limited period of time and after consuming the granted time, IP needs to be leased again or transferred for other services, as it depends on the business requirements (Panek, n.d). Technology Design The requirement of Mr. Johnson is just to have an excellent network connection as he has started his business into a new location. The structure of his new office includes six rooms. The rooms are distributed in such a manner that one room is used by MR Johnson himself. The other four rooms are dedicated to the employees and the last one is saved for the machinery such as laser printer. The employee rooms must contain work stations. In addition, these work stations must be loaded with Microsoft Office, Windows OS, and an excellent network connection that is provided by the AT&T Business DSL. The AT & T Business DSL provides wired connection due to the requirement by Mr. Johnson as he did not prefer wireless connection. All the latest technologies come with the problems. The same case is with the wireless connection however, the network connections can be protected securely (bankadviser.com, 2012). The internet connection that is utilized by Mr. Johnson and his employees to fulfill business needs for instance, emails, web research, and making schedules online etc. In order to meet these requirements by Mr. Johnson, a broadband connection containing 512 kbps or above is utilized. However, to run the browsers smoothly a stronger connection is recommended (About.com, 2014). The four employees including Mr. Johnson himself is using the internet connection at the same time therefore higher broadband connection is needed to ensure easy downloading. Moreover, emails will also get the advantage from high band width. The email sending or receiving procedure would hardly get few seconds to download because an average size of an email is around 50KB. On the other hand, this time period is for an average email size therefore, time can vary depending upon the attachment size (Arstechnica.com, 2012). The larger size emails will also find no issues with the broadband connection of 512 kbps. The last room is dedicated for machinery like laser printer so that Mr. Johnson can take print outs of important data easily and hassle free. In fact, a broadband connection of 512 kbps is still a better option including printer as printers do not consume much bandwidth. Network Design The network diagram illustrates the whole idea of network along with devices and applications that are mandatory for the newly formed business. The main work station belongs to Mr. Johnson and the other four desktop PC will be connected to them via switch. The switch is a middle point that transfers and observes the package that is received through network connection (Daron.net, 199). Moreover, it is then connected to the Local Area Network thus permitting other devices to join in with each other in order to continue interface. The information is received by the switch if it is connected with router. The information is collected from different networks and can be transferred from one work station to another via modem by using network connection (Plugthingsin.com, 2014). The internet access is permitted after the router is linked with the respected modem. In addition, the wired connection will provide excellent services to Mr. Johnson and this can be described by the diagram. HP LaserJet Pro 40 M451dw Wireless Colour Laser Printer with Duplex: The HP Laser Jet printed has a unique characteristic of quick and easy printing services for the users. This printer is user friendly and has a printing speed of 21 pm black and colour. The resolution of a printer is maximized and mentioned as 60 dpi and has 1 Hi-Sped USB 2.0 port, 1 Fast Ethernet 10/10 Base – TX network part, and 1WiFi 802.1 b/g/n (frys.com,2014).” “Produce professional-quality colour documents with ease and fast speed. Seamlessly integrate into your office or wireless home network. HP features help you save paper and energy, and print from virtually anywhere with HP e-Print (Frys.com, 2014).” Asus RT-AC6U Wireless AC1750 Dual-Band Gigabit Router The Asus wireless router is used to provide maximum support to the switch and to the router itself. The specification of this router is described as: The 5th generation 802.1ac chipset is present in this router. This means it provides the users a synchronized dual-band 2.4GHz/5GHz for up to super-fast 1.75Gbps (frys.com, 2014).” The core element of this router is that it contains twin USB ports that perform multiple tasks such as, quicker file input, networking and 3G connectivity (Frys.com, 2014). Also it is IPv6 facilitate for potential Prof Web surfing compatibility (frys.com, 2014). Motorola SBG6580 Modem The main features of this modem is that it contains six gigabit Ethernet ports that allows supple transfer of data and the high-speed connectivity allows the user to perform the task hassle free. Moreover, the modem also includes Auto Negotiate and Auto MDIX. The network communication includes six Gigabit Ethernet ports and that wire IPv4 and IPv6 in order to enlarge the capability to address the networks. In fact, there are eight downstream are present that involves Chanel bonding. However, the four upstream channels are used to maximize the rates for the data. The 30 Mbps or above data is found in DOCSIS and 40 Mbps in Euro DOCSIS in the received (downstream) data stream and over 10 Mbps in the send (upstream) data stream (frys.com, 2014).” AT&T U-verse® High Speed Internet - Business Edition Power The downstream speed of up to 45.0 Mbps along with an upstream speed of up to 6.0 Mbps is present in the ISP. In addition, the multiple devices can be used easily over this speed and it provides great benefit Mr. Johnson and his employs. This speed can allow to connect multiple devices and to avail other features such as, web search, emailing, and scheduling via web entrance. Cost Assessment Cost assessment for Mr. Smith’s Network is as follows: Router x 1 = provided by the cable service provider Switches x 2 = $600 LED Television x 1 = $8000 Laser Color Printer x 1 = $500 Cable Modem = provided by the cable service provider Cat 5 e Cable/patch panels/RJ-45 connections/tools = $200 References Benefits and features of DNS for your server, (n.d) Retrieved 10/17/2011, 2011, from http://dns.servers.co.uk/dns-features-and-benefits Troubleshooting DNS servers: Domain name system(DNS) (n.d) Retrieved 10/17/2011, 2011, from http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc787724(WS.10).aspx Snedaker, S., Shinder, D.
