Topic : Spam In the reported case, Scott Richter and his Colorado based company Optln is reportedly considered to be one of the biggest spammers of all times. They have been sending a whooping 38 billion messages per year to the inboxes of different recipients. They have pushed everything all the way from mortgages to pornography websites in their spam venture. Later, Microsoft and the New York attorney general went on to sue Mr. Richter for eighteen million dollars in 2003. He was accused of violating state and federal laws. Even though in a latest settlement, Mr. Richter has denied the allegations, he has agreed to follow the follow federal and state laws by pledging not to send spam to anyone and allowed his business to be monitored for the next 3 years. Microsoft is investing 6 million dollars in this venture and on anti spamming efforts in this regard. The case highlights how big a menace to the society, to the digital world the spam can be. Spam is a menace on the web. It is a moral, social and an ethical wrong. If it falls in the hands of the young generation, then it can spoil them to the point of manipulating their young minds. They can get involved into wrong activities, be exploited and even go haywire from the direction that their elders have set them for. Sometimes they may seek refuge in all the wrong activities propagated by porn. Thus Spam is a big no. (Internet Advertising shoots past estimates, 2006) Impact on individuals: Excessive marketing serves to manipulate the minds of an individual. It brain washes them so much so that they are tempted to act accordingly. Internet marketing has both its cons and pros. Internet marketing which is also called web marketing, online marketing, and online marketing is essentially marketing of products and service on the Internet. With the rapid evolution of Internet, marketing took on over an all new level. On the plus side, Internet Marketing not just became cheaper online but it paved way for newer more innovative business prospects in the online world. Today information is distributed across to the global audience at it incredibly low prices and sometimes even free of cost. The interactive nature of web-based means of communication stands out as the primary reason behind its success both in responding instantly and also eliciting responses for that matter. It has helped individuals acquire what they want without any hassle. Today, Amazon, eBay etc are standing on his doorstep and it’s hassle free for him. However, it has taken over a lot of his time too. With the emergence of social media like face book etc, it has become more of an addiction, a daily potion without which he ceases to function. There is a severe form of dependency on social media that man is facing as a result of excessive internet marketing. He feels socially paralyzed without internet marketing. My space has piled up almost 67 million members. It was launched in 2004 and is growing up at an average 250,000 new members daily according Danny Dudes who is a MySpace spokes woman. It’s phenomenal growth rate has pushed its popularity along the lines of more notable players such as yahoo and Google. This is yet another social networking site which has cashed in on the most viable popular marketing models and built up its establishment on the network. The primary purpose of MySpace was communication. It provided a means to communicate and establish one’s own little corner on the internet solely dedicated to work and build up on their interests. (Center for Responsive Poltics) MySpace in its marketing endeavors also promised superior communication mechanisms. It came up with large scale colorful bulletins and private messages that allowed one to choose the right medium that they needed in order to convey whatever the message or pitch the produce chose for himself. The quantity of images, information and videos uploaded are never restricted. This indicates that one can plug in as much amount of information as they want without worrying about space. Even more lucrative was the fact that they offered it free of cost without involving any overheads in the process. MySpace cashed in on all these features and marketed itself aggressively across the globe. However today its marketing strategies are under question and my space is increasingly scrutinized. The marketing models it incorporated have been widely exploited. The affiliate marketing led to sexual contact of two men with minors. They got to know each other through MySpace only. They were 14 and 11 years old respectively. Impact on basic consumer rights: E-marketing is one broad concept for it refers to not only emails, the wireless mails, but also management of digital customer data and electronic customer relationship management systems. It is a unique combination of both the creative as well as technical aspects of the internet. These may incorporate design and development, advertisement related concept, and sales. It extends beyond mere building and setting up a website nor is it restricting to simple banner placements on other sites. On the other hand, e-marketing also takes away some of the basic consumer rights, like the consumer right to see the product, to feel the product, be completely satisfied with it and then buy it. At times, he has to pay extra for transportation. While he is allowed to charge back for any defects in big companies, for smaller companies there is no such thing. Moreover, the privacy of his information is also put at risk and in perspective due to internet marketing. (Center for Responsive Poltics) (Internet Marketing, 2007) Limits of marketing on the digital environment: Marketing in the digital environment is confusing. There are way too many things to learn. The more one learns the more one feels that there is yet more to know. While typical business models last 2 years, the shelf life of businesses on the internet loses their appeal in 6 months. The competition is tough with too many scams on the web. Many people are scammed and fooled into believing that they can make quick and easy money on the internet.
