Though news is made available to the public at large with the help of the traditional method of printed newspapers, the demand for e-newspapers have been felt to be growing rapidly. This has compelled leading newspapers like Forbes and Business week to set up e-news websites where audiences can easily access news without waiting for the printed newspapers to be available. Challenge for printed medium (the newspapers) and television news channels is immense and in order to retain their customer base, the need for adoption of suitable methods with the help of latest technologies is becoming the need of the hour. Description of the technology related trend (e-books, blogs and websites) There has been found a noticeable change in the preferences of the customers as far as their choice of a particular medium of news delivery is concerned. To strive in today’s competitive world, it has become a challenge for the leading newspapers to make the news available to it customers as early as possible before its competitors grab the attention of the target audiences. To generate profits, some newspapers have adopted a scheme by which they make some news available for free and some content is marked as ‘premium content’ which can be accessed on payment of a considerable amount of fees. This strategy helps in building demand for the news within the audiences. Internet journalism has become the order of the day with audiences more interested in gaining information about different happenings across the world through leading newspaper websites rather than the printed newspaper(Group M., et.al., 2005). Web technologies have enabled these companies to gain feedback on the different news articles published on its websites. This helps the newspapers to understand whether any improvement has to be brought in the content or not. E-books have become a popular medium of gaining thorough in-depth knowledge about any topic which needs clarity. Topics can vary from something very theoretical to something very practical like the use of technologies in shaping the businesses of today’s organisations. E-books help audiences to surf easily through a wide range of books which might not be possible in reality. Audiences prefer e-books as they can have access to a wide range of subjects, story books, fiction books and technology related books without purchasing them physically. Many websites like e-snips and Amazon.com offers a wide range of free e-books to be accessed by its audiences at large. Blogs has become another popular medium of sharing information with the target audiences. Every organisation of today develops a blog site where it shares information with its customers. Blogs are written in creative style which attracts audiences to read the articles published in them. Though creative in style, blogs ensure in delivering the correct information to its audiences but the writing style is informal and more interactive. This helps in building a rapport with the customers and generating increased levels of customer loyalty. So, it’s apparent that technology is giving the websites an edge as far as their news delivery is concerned. With the rapid improvement of technologies, the method of disbursing news to the audiences is undergoing a sea change. The preferences of customers is also shifting from using printed medium as the sole medium of accessing news to relying more on e-news, blogs and e-books for information generation. Impact of recent technology trends (e-books, blogs and websites) on audience With the rapid improvement in technology, the preferences of consumers have undergone a sea change. Especially the younger section of the society is more inclined in accessing news through websites or e-books rather than going through a printed medium. So, to match with the growing demand of e-newspapers, the leading newspaper houses are adopting measures by which the quality of the articles and the newsletters can be improved significantly in order to attract more customers. To make this venture profitable, though some of the news published in their respective websites are made freely available to the audiences but some of them which are written on major events, are available only when paid a certain amount. Subscription offers are also given to the audiences who want to access all the news round the year. This not only increases its profitability but also helps in attracting more customers. With the discovery of latest technologies, e-newspapers have become one of the indispensable modes of news distribution amongst the target audiences. Audiences are always on the look out of sources where genuine news can be available. This has triggered the rapid growth of companies creating their blog sites which offer news on a diverse set of topics starting from news about some movies to tracking down important political, legal or socio-economic news. People are more interested in reading blogs as they not only provide information on some important events but also on varieties of interesting topics which help them to attract increasing number of customers. With the help of latest technology and the growing popularity of news channels, news of any kind gets transmitted easily and the companies with the help of the accumulated information develop their blogs. To attract increasing number of audiences, blogs are written in an interactive fashion and in an interesting manner so that it not only helps the audiences to get information about an event but also serves as a mode of entertainment. E-books form an important source of information. It is not always possible to access a book physically and also to go thorough a huge number of text books, in such cases, e-books serve as a potential option for information generation. Many a time, to develop organisational reports within a stipulated time frame, project managers feel an ardent need of going through certain textbooks in order to brush through certain concepts, in those time, e-books serve as a major help to the managers as they can easily access such e-books through Google books or e-snips. E-books also help in reducing boredom as many popular story books can be accessed through websites such as e-snips. So, companies are more and more becoming eager to upload a wide variety of information on their websites so that they can attract the attention of the customers. Websites have become one of the important modes of communicating information about a company’s products and service to its customers. This helps them to increase the demand of their products. Customers also gain first hand information about the various measures adopted by the companies to preserve their environment thereby reduce the carbon footprint within the atmosphere. To attract audiences, every website offering news services crave to provide some unique information which would help them to attract more and more audiences. This would also increase the number of visits to their respective websites which would increase their ranking when compared to other websites offering similar kind of stuff. Building on latest technological innovations, companies are adopting these recent trends to strengthen their position in the market which in turn determines their competitiveness in the market. Impact on traditional news sources, such as newspapers and television With the increasing popularity of e-based technologies, the importance of printed medium as the sole mode of news has reduced significantly. Audiences of today no longer rely solely on the printed medium for any news. There has been a noticeable shift toward e-newspapers and e-books for news generation and information on varied topics. The dependency on printed medium has slowly erased out and people have found out websites which offer genuine news at no cost whatsoever. On one hand, this has increased the popularity of such websites, e-books and different blogs but it has reduced the role played by printed newspapers in delivering news to the customers. Leading newspapers across the world have felt the impact of such increasing demand of e-books and websites as the latest medium of dissipating information about an event. So, to remain competitive, many newspapers with the help of latest technologies have designed e-newspapers in order to retain their loyal customer base. It has been a challenge for leading newspapers to retain their edge in the market. With the changing preference of customers and changing lifestyle of people, people do not find time to go thoroughly through printed newspapers but they can easily browse through e-newspapers. Television was also once held as one of the major source of information but with the improvement of technology, television has become a secondary means of information dissemination. Audiences rely more on websites, blogs and e-books to find the information they are looking for rather than grabbing any printed medium or television in order to do so. The importance of television has decreased over the years with the growing popularity of web technology. The number of internet users is increasing by each day which is depicting the trend of the audiences. The dependence on this virtual network has increased manifold times over the years. Television being an immobile device has lost its impetus amongst the younger generation. It has become the source of entertainment for the aged and the housewives. The popularity of television as the source of news generation has reduced significantly. Television has being cornered by the younger generation. To cope up with the present competition, many private news channels are being launched and each strives to make the news available to the audiences at the earliest hour. This has resulted in a cut-throat competition amongst the news channels as each is adopting measures to build its niche in the market. News channels try to find out news which has not been yet tracked by other news channels and they adopt measures by which it can be presented in a unique fashion. Presenters are given special training to deliver news in such a fashion that it catches the attention of the audience and they feel the urge to watch the entire story. Television news channels exaggerate the real event in such a manner that it looses its impetus on the audience. Audiences get lost in the news and its presentation as the ultimate news story moves away from the actual event. Moreover, before disclosing the actual state of affairs, many advertisements take place which hampers the concentration of the audiences. It leaves the audiences dissatisfied and they get distracted which results in surfing channels or switching off the television set. But such type of disturbances does not occur when audiences refer to any website for information generation. There is no break in the entire process and the news is also available in a crisp and concise version which helps the audiences to remain glued to the websites. Moreover, blogs not only provide relevant information but also serve as a mode of entertainment as the news is written in an interactive and creative manner. This helps them in attracting increased number of audiences. With such unique modes of presentation, printed form of newspapers and television are losing their ground to advanced technology modes such as e-books, websites and blogs. To capture the attention of target audiences, newspapers are changing the mode of presenting news. So, it is quite apparent that with the development and subsequent popularity of web based technologies, newspapers have lost their monopoly as far as the source of news generation is considered. They are relentlessly challenged by websites which are offering news free of cost and also by e-books which are helping audiences to get access to a wide variety of news and information, which may range from being mere subjective concepts to some practical information. Conclusion In order to maintain their niche in the market, newspapers and television have to undergo a revolutionary reform which might help it to retain its existing customers and generate more customers. The shift in dependency for proper news to websites and blogs is eating away the popularity that was solely enjoyed by the printed mode of communication- the newspapers. This has started challenging its market popularity and to remain competitive, e-newspapers have been launched by many leading newspapers so that they can attract the attention of the audiences at large. This has on the overall benefited the audiences as they are able to access a great variety of news for free or sometimes on the payment of a small amount. Newspapers have realized that to maintain their niche in the market they need to innovate technologies and invent methods by which they can retain their customers. Reference Group M., et.al., 2005.
