DQ : Content Validation Do you think that any form of document content validation should be applied to web pages before they are placed in the public domain? That is, some form of assurance that they do not contain completely incorrect information. As opposed to censorship, this could be some form of assurance that someone is not advocating incorrect doses of medicine, or advocating historical events that did not take place. etc. Any do you think some form of automatic checking is viable? Although this may be difficult to achieve, document content validation should be applied to web pages before they are placed in public domain for many reasons.

First and foremost is the fact that individual can put up any content they want without adhering to validating or retrieving from a trusted site. In essence, that is detrimental since the younger generation relies so much on the internet. In html coding, it is essential that individuals should utilize the effectiveness of “metatags” for their benefits. Document validation is not a form of censorship because it is implying the component of integrity. Incorrect information undoubtedly will become the fatal flaw as it would lead to wrong information.

Since the internet is such a vast network, incorrect information can be prevalent everywhere. The problem is however; how does one know which information to trust? Undoubtedly, schools have invested millions of dollars to buy databases that provide scholarly information from trusted sources. Databases such as Google Scholar, Proquest, and Galenet has facilitated this issue as Proquest is one of the most prominent websites that has wide range of topics. Proquest uses a powerful database system which enables it to product strong search queries.

In addition, it comes with automatic citation which facilitates students, instructors, and professionals. However, this does not solve the problem for individuals who are not students and do not possess access to these databases. Documenting is critical in as society where everyone seems to have “self-proclaimed” titles. To make matters worse, companies often seek to mislead people by putting incorrect information. When it comes to medical content, supplement companies are notorious for advertising wrong information in such a health obsessed society.

The tendency of these companies to have fake claims without adequate justifications is the testament towards documentation. Although it is the duty of a consumer to do their own research, it does not diminish the fact that many individuals are bias with their information. Hence, the usage of “Wikipedia” has been clearly out of the question for references in most schools. However, the mass majority of the populous heavily rely on Wikipedia for their source of information knowing that anyone has the power to edit the content.

Thus, the blame exists on individuals and consumers themselves who fail to do own research along with individuals who offer information based upon no validity. DQ : Prediction Write a prediction on what effects you think the Web, and in particular, the enormous amount of documents accumulating on the Web will play in your life, and your children’s life in the future. As society progresses to 21st century, the internet and the Web will play a drastic role that will
