ALL ABOUT MEDIA Summary The rampant growth of technology has altered the conventional features of visual media like television, film, and video by launching more feasible means of communication and access. The emergence of YouTube and ‘viral video’ is the key milestone in the history of social media that promoted user-created content on YouTube. This paper analyses the significant aspects that set film and television apart as distinctive media. It also considers the question to what extent online video performs the function of a forthcoming medium and what notable features are there those make online video unique. The final, perhaps the most important focus of this paper is on the relevance of this particular topic which is mainly discussed in the articles ‘All Your Chocolate Rain Are Belong to Us’?; Viral Video, YouTube and the Dynamics of Participatory Culture (Burgess) and Watching Television (Hanhardt). Differences between film and television Although both television and film have certain similar features, as a social media television has gained an upper hand by providing viewers with instant access to live programs. Television is the most vital cause that altered the cultural pattern of societies and family environment allover the globe throughout the past century. Its potentiality to bring big images home in a viable manner that fit it into the viewing conditions of customer is distinctive. However, despite these conveniences television is highly controlled by commercial goals from which film as a medium is comparatively free. The commercial breaks in between a program that is allotted for advertisements, indeed affect television viewers’ level of content. Enormous variety of programs telecast on TV leaves little chance to viewer to choose other than what is provided by the channels (Hanhardt 1985, p. 61). Television and Video Both television and video have brought notable changes in the society to a great extent. They encourage the public to frame and reflect their opinions and imaginations either for information or for entertainment. However, television in particular, has transformed the human life by acquiring an important role in family environment. The emergence of Viral Video as a promoter of social network is the subsequent development of internet and other digital devices. Globalization of socio- economic and cultural affairs could be attributed to online video as it expanded the scope of a virtual marketplace. Today, people are able to deal their lives with desirable patterns of standards simply by choosing the best from online. In contrast, as television program is concerned, Television has definitely been a limited feature of communication as it has always made no room for two-way communication where the viewer is only a passive listener; and also the viewer is of course, unable to express himself to the device by any means; no communication, no interaction and nor does he have a chance to fashion the program of his choice (Hanhardt 1985, p. 58). YouTube Online videos like YouTube have emerged as an ‘on-demand television’ that can provide viewers with instant access to an array of programs including music, film, cartoon, and many more. Since access to this technology is comparatively low-cost, anyone can enter this stream and achieve commercial gain and popularity by introducing innovative ideas on any subject. The advent of YouTube indeed was the initial stage of online video revolution. Since the innovation, online video became the inevitable internet experience and a significant part of e-commerce or digital marketing. YouTube allows people to use its site as a storage site for their video clips; and “all that people want to do is to display a You Tube logo on their site and the right to make your videos available on YouTube” (Smith 2008). Music Video Music video has a long history dating back to 1980s since when it has been one of the major influences in the global entertainment industry. Music industry currently has entered the new world of digital music where music can be electronically transmitted to every corner of the world. Internet has become the biggest boost to music industry as it provides innumerable offers to the music customers for choosing and ordering music online. Music video is also potential enough to alter the conventional genre of television programs by obtaining the lion’s part of its total time. Today, many of the programs shown on television are the creation of music video producers. In a nut shell, music video alone can facilitate a new viewing culture no matter the result will be of little potential effect. An easy analysis of involvement of viral videos in spreading replicable ideas is possible without stretching any relevant available fact because such ideas expressed in performances and practices for benefiting the vernacular creativity are promoted more effectively only through popular social networks (Burgess 2008, p.108). My Personal Opinion about This Topic There has been little number of discussions made on this topic over the years genuinely, as it is found in Burgess (2008) and Hanhardt (1985). Any discussion under this topic would go endlessly articulated with the unlimited attachment people have with any medium of expressing themselves. The relevance of this topic never fades out in any debate because media are the elements that connect people together and help them exchange their ideas one another for an easy life. It is never so easy to determine one better than other media. However, the idea that media would converge in future seems to be an excellent and an innovative one (Hanhardt 1985; Hackley 2010). Regardless of their own typical features, media are however meant for public awareness on new ideas and acknowledgement of facts of public interest. According to the writers, the spectrum of concept conveyance deals with many elements that contribute to the share of enthusiasm guaranteed by media to public. Compared to the difficulties man faced before the entry of a text-format of communication, life has traveled a long way ahead and we are now able to express ideas of unimaginable reality. Viral video that has been posted on YouTube, MySpace, Google Video, Facebook etc can be an excellent example to this achievement (Greenberg, cited in Burgess 2008, p.102). According to the findings of the author, it is to be noticed that they are the mediating mechanisms which facilitate the origination, adoption and preservation of cultural practices within social networks; and also there is a great argument that YouTube as the largest net work is larger as a social connection between participants than merely being a facilitator for cultural conversations consisting of videos and sounds (Burgess 2008, p.102). Comparison among media elements has always been a strong theme of discussion in any group ever since it was considered a topic. The arguers of this topic generally find a good length of discussion because of the enforcement it applies on the debaters to acknowledge itself as an inevitable part of human life. And the very vigor online video and other media exerts on the human community is powerful enough to entangle the users from over the world towards a centre continuum consisting mechanisms for transforming information globally. In contrast, the videos published and circulated through YouTube raises chances for skeptics to frame questions to challenge the media videos so as to find if they are traditional or mere user-created contents (Burgess 2008, p. 103). The emergence of viral video has been showing a tendency to grow with rise in public mobility and international interactions. Therefore it can be implied that media itself emerged conglomerate dealings to facilitate the collection and distribution of news, information and entertainment events to people across the globe. The growth of news and entertainment business and its impact on socio-economic factors of different countries attracted researchers like Burgess and Hanhardt to the scope of a differently recognizable scholastic excellence lying deep in it. Media in the initial phase only focused on the circulation of specific news contents and information on various scientific findings. As commercial elements added in profitable circulation of news, it paved the way for emergence of media including television and video as solid business commodities. The scope of concept trade was further expanded with the establishment of competitive business media business groups across the world. Although this trade was limited to news circulations, the later developments excavated the possibility of promotion of entertainment features through media. Radios, televisions, movies etc were introduced to the media segment with a proposal for wide range distribution of amusement content rather than usual news items. The growth of media business was so very rapid that people passionately welcomed it and made it an inevitable part of their life. An effective research on this topic can bring out rays that focus on the influence of media on public life as in relationship with world politics, economic trends, business and entertainment. A research on this topic should also focus on the credibility, integrity and loyalty guaranteed by the media barons these days. This topic is relevant to the context as learning about media gives a lot of scope to the students to encourage and facilitate new windows of academic excellence. A global media culture has evolved students as wise customers of media as they are exposed to the web of various idea producers. Learning about media also keeps the student engaged in real time validation of learning. Distinguished experiences and connectivity to global public through media help students focus on critical thinking of social issues. Learning about different media also enhances students know more about the culture of other nationals and their lifestyles. This is the author Burgess’ (2008, p.102) different view through which his emphasizes go much the creation of cultural, social and economic value in participatory culture by enterprising highest preference for the central role of cultural participation. Moreover, it also motivates the talents of investigative learning in every student. Learning about media is surely a means to improve the ability and proficiency of students as they tend to set high standards of targets taking examples from every possible role model. Why do I agree with the authors? I like discussing this topic elaborately for various reasons. Primarily, it gives me a smooth line of imagination through which ideas are expressed effectively. As writer envisages, in future the multi part discourse of enormous variety of programs telecast on TV would leave the viewer a challenge to distinguish them between because television will not be a ‘simple conduit of information fashioned around a single ideological perspective’ (Hanhardt 1985, p.61). My own enthusiasm in writing about the importance of media is boundless because the very thought of media ushers me into the imagination of its future. I believe that a person having access to the current world and awareness of technological advancements would agree with the authors, especially on their ideas of media convergence.
