Dream job and procrastination It is everyone’s dream to make it in life with a good job opportunity. However, before this is realized, one would be expected to work hard in school for years before success is realized. One such job is being a manger of a large corporation. I have a Major in Business Administration and my dream is to be a manager of a large corporation like Procter and Gamble. The essay describes my dream job in managing the company and the challenges I am likely to face in my quest for success and excellence. The second part of the essay will discuss procrastination in detail. Procrastination refers to the constant carrying forward of what one is supposed to do. From the old adage, ‘procrastination is the thief of time’, it is clear that people must avoid this vice at all costs as it hinders progress and ensures that projects stall. Management is a very important aspect of any organization as it ensures that the organization performs from all quarters. Management in a company may be in the employee aspect, financial aspect and the overall running of the company. Majoring in business administration is the first stepping stone to getting closer my dream job as a manager of a big company in the near future. However, success will entail that one earns a reputation at the place of work through doing being a noteworthy team player, efficient worker and time conscious individual. Besides, communication with other members of the team is very important. Therefore, becoming a manager of a big corporation will require that one is able to incorporate all these principles so as to attain success (Witzel 12). There are many reasons why I have always dreamt of being the manager at Procter and Gamble. This is a multinational company and one of the most respected companies in the world. Being a manager of this great company would, therefore, be a prestigious fete for me. I am going to gain fame by being the manager of such a great company since it spans across many nations. Another reason why I would want to be a manager of Procter and Gamble is that I am going to gain considerable experience which is going to assist me for my future assignments. This is a large company with enormous expectations, and as a manager of such a company, I will need to have potent leadership skills in order to succeed. By succeeding with such a great company like this, it would enable me to succeed with any other company after this experience. Thirdly, a hefty pay is a motivation for any employee. I am equally motivated to work for Procter and Gamble due to the motivation for a good salary. A good leader is also one who leads from the front without delegating all the work to understudy workers. Subordinates are going to perform well if only their leader is responsible and serious. Excellent management also requires that one appreciates good work done by employee, and not looking for an opportunity to criticize them always. Complimenting employees for good work done will ensure that they feel motivated and as part of the team. The manager should be bold in making decisions; making decisions involves risk taking and a true leader needs to be courageous enough to take these risks. Furthermore, a competent manager will need to avoid favoring any employee at the workplace. This is because, when it comes to leadership, all subjects are equal, and favoring others would be against organizational ethics (Drucker 61). Therefore, in pursuing my dream as a manager of a large corporation, I will need to put all these in mind. Being a manager of a big company has its pros and cons as we shall discover below. There are many advantages of being a manger of a company, and in case I realize my dream, I am going to benefit a great deal. The first advantage is financial gain. Managers of companies earn more than most employees; hence they are better off financially than most of these managers. As much as we all pursue careers that interest us, the first gain of working is financial gain. With a good salary and hefty allowances, managers have a noteworthy living standard (Rogers 27). Another advantage I am going to gain as a result of being a manager is that I am going to have authority. By virtue of being a manager of a company, one has more power than the other employees, and this gives the position the prestige that everybody wants to have in life. This power is a functional responsibility entrusted to a manager, to enable him to be able to control the people that his leading, like setting work plans and allocation of duties. The result of this power may be evaluated on how well your group is performs (Drucker 37). Accomplishment is another advantage of being a manager. Accomplishment is a form of emotional satisfaction in that a manger is content of having such a high post in an organization. Efficient workers are those who have accomplished their dreams and goals in life. They will work even harder so as to attain more success in life. I would feel accomplished when I will become a manger of a large corporate organization since this has always been my dream and ambition. People in the society seem to value titles, as far you may not earn more than everybody being a manager will sound impressive to many people in our society. Management is not easy at all, and it has got so many disadvantages associated with it. The issue of us having a feeling that we may be watched or being in a spotlight all the time is not acceptable. For a manager, an individual has to learn how to live with this, as there are many people who lead and they think that they can deliver more than you do, and they put more effort day in and day out to impress. If you happen to make a wrong decision, they may take that as an excuse to push you out, to increase their chances of getting a chance to try their hands in that position, as well. This creates a stiff competition, and when you have achieved that, you always have a feeling that somebody may be watching to make a mistake (Osterman 75). In being a manager of a company, there are some restrictions that may be imposed upon you, so as to avoid public scrutiny which may dent the image of the company. For example, while other employees are free to trade in the stock market, managers are not asked to trade in such stocks since the public may interpret it like they are favoring themselves. Therefore, while a manager will earn a lot from his/her position, he/she will lose a lot through such restrictions. Being a manager has another disadvantage in that it is demanding and tedious. As a manger, I would be required to sign many documents, and if anything goes wrong I would be held legally liable. It is the manager’s duties to ensure that; all workers are working well and are protected; all company goals are being realized and the company is performing well in the market segment (Dale 62). This is a very demanding exercise, and it needs one to be hardworking and thorough in order to keep things in check. Being a manager, you own the responsibility of making final decisions, which may not be so easy to make as everybody will be depending on your decision as a manager. You may make wrong decisions that may affect the way you relate with people, who you are controlling and this may make it hard for your work of management because people won’t be relying on your decisions. A manager of a company has many responsibilities to perform within a given day than any other employee who works within the same company. He is the one who is supposed to build a strong relation with the community that surrounds them, and if this is not achieved, the manager will be criticized and judged harshly (Dale 48). Therefore, management is a very Good position in terms of money, power and authority, but, it is demanding, tedious and requires commitment. Procrastination We all have tasks that we need to accomplish on a day to day basis. However, it is not always the case that we complete our tasks effectively and successfully as we get side tracked by other events, which forces us to push our tasks to later times. This behavior of human beings is called procrastination. Procrastination discerns between good and poor time mangers since good time managers are always focused in what they have planned to do, and nothing can side track them to make them take back in another activity. Just like the old saying goes, Procrastination is the thief of time. This is truly the case since, by continually carrying forward of tasks that are supposed to be done now, one will waste a lot of time because these tasks will have to be done at later times. People are, therefore, encouraged to be noteworthy time mangers by preventing traits like procrastination. Procrastination can be triggered by various factors like; laziness, lack of motivation, a poor work ethic and social distractions. Laziness causes an individual to habitually postpone doing some things. The same applies to a poor work ethic. A good work ethic requires that one has focus, commitment, resilience and teamwork. Without these values, one will not work well and will be prone to postponing the set targets of the company. It is, therefore, not a shock that a focused worker will bring considerable success to the company he/she works for when compared to a worker who procrastinates. The world is fast becoming a global competitive platform when it comes to business, and this requires that all workers are able to inject commitment, hard work and focus into their endeavors, otherwise, their company will not enjoy considerable success. Lack of motivation is another factor that contributes to this vice. Talk about a company not giving its employees good pay packages or whose team leaders do not motivate other team members. Such team players are most likely to have inefficiency in their working which culminates in vices like procrastination. Most attributes of procrastination are negative but there are other attributes that are positive. However, procrastination should not be encouraged in any corporate setting whatsoever. For one, procrastination enables employees of an organization to complete a task in detail before embarking on another task. In case there is a problem that comes up after completing one task, employees would push forward the other task so as to complete the incomplete one. This is advantageous. Procrastination also ensures that projects are not rushed since enough time is allocated to each project, and in case one is not completed in the required time, the commencement of another project will have to be pushed forward. There are many instances of projects being rushed so as to satisfy project time frames. This is detrimental since quality is compromised at the expense of timely delivery of work. There are various disadvantages of procrastination. For one, procrastination is a waste of time since projects that would take a few hours or days to be completed instead last an agonizingly long period of time. This stalls the development of a company or business organization. This not only applies to organizations, but is also applicable to people. Time is a noteworthy asset in life and without managing it wisely, we are bound to lose everything or stall in different aspects. Procrastination also affects an individual financially. Through hard work, people are able to achieve a lot in terms of finance and earnings. Procrastination reduces all this since the work covered by these people is really low as compared to the normal work that they do. Take an example; a manager of a corporation where hard work is a requirement is able to earn more than a manager of another corporation that does not mind about time management skills. The disadvantages of procrastination outweigh the advantages and calls for a need to overcome procrastination by all means possible. This is because; procrastination has been associated with inefficiency and low productivity in any company or business organization. On a personal level, procrastination affects the goals of an individual in that one does not accomplish intended goals in time. As a result of this, individuals are required to overcome this habit and instead exhibit a noteworthy work ethic that preaches hard work, resilience and determination. Drafting a work schedule enables one to execute tasks in terms of urgency and importance. This will ensure that no particular activity is overlooked or prolonged aimlessly. The same is applicable in company situations whereby the team leaders have highlighted the important tasks that need to be executed. This would ensure that people are able to execute tasks in terms of importance. Monitoring of employees would also ensure that they do not procrastinate when working. Employees should earn as they work so that, an employer who wanted to earn much would have to avoid such vices like gambling in schools. In conclusion, any person or employee needs to organize himself/herself and adhere to his/her schedules to make it is easier for him to remain glued to the achievements that he has set to meet. Avoiding procrastination will be a significant factor that determines whether one achieves the set goals or not. With proper management of an individual's time and proper scheduling of events, one would surely experience success in all parameters of life. Seeking the advice of other people who have worked for many years is of help as it offers first hand information and in case one has the habit of procrastination, countermeasures to the problems can be addressed by the experts.
