College Essay Affiliation: The story of my life is unbelievable and when I happen to tell it to people, nobody believes me but it is true. I was born in one of the less fancy neighborhoods in the infamous Queens area of New York. I cannot say I was born poor but neither was I born rich. Life was the usual for any toddler and I got good things such as toys, got to go to Disneyworld (or at least the version of it then) and even attended a private kindergarten and middle school.
All this however tumbled down with the separation of my biological parents. My father was the sole bread winner and my mother was just a housewife whose main role was to take care of myself and my young sister. With the separation, my mother had to find a job to support us as the income from the child support was never enough (for the short time the child support was paid). My parents were my idol and with them separated, my world started slowly collapsing against me.
A few years passed and I slowly started getting used to the absence of having two parents in the house and I made a great friend from school. The friendship had been casual at first but I found out we shared a lot of things starting from having divorced parents to him having a younger sibling at home and we soon became best friends. We were inseparable and we even managed to go to the same high school.
On our last year of high school, we were at a friend’s birthday party and he kept on telling me how such a great friend I was and that he would miss me but I just laughed at him and told him we would go to the same college and that he had nothing to worry about. When we were leaving the party, a truck which was being driven by a drunk driver rammed into us and my best friend passed on the spot. The blow that death left me was ten times worse than the separation and finally divorce of my parents. Life was never the same from then on.
I took time of school for three months as I slowly sank into depression. However one day I decided that my best friend would not have wanted me to wallow in misery but would have loved to see me excel and go to the college of my our dream. His great friendship and his easy going manner taught me that life is too short not to do the things you love without procrastination and the first on my list is to excel in college and in my career as well and have a great legacy. I am a tough individual even though I may not physically look like it as life toughened me up. I do not see my background as a hindrance to my future success but rather as a stepping stone to achieving my life’s ultimate goal. I now know that I can survive any challenge and hardship thrown my way and still emerge victorious in the end and that has beome my motto. Read More

Literary Response to Passage from The Story of My Life by Helen Keller

...?Literary Response to Passage from The Story of My Life by Helen Keller. The chosen extract describes a situation that most people will never experience: growing up as a person who is deaf and blind. An extended analogy using the concept of a ship is presented here. The literary device of analogy is derives from the Greek term meaning “equality of rations, proportion” and is defined as “Reasoning or arguing from a parallel case.” (Lanham, 1991, p. 11). In factual texts, like reports and instructions, authors rarely use analogies, because they are concerned with things as they actually are, without any embellishments. In literary works, however, where different perceptions, feelings and moods are to be conveyed alongside pure facts... a long...

The story of my life

...?Erica Torres English Com 2 The Story of My Life Life is a bed of roses. Whoever said that must be out of his mind. From what I have been through, I can say that life is more like a bed of thorns, with maybe one or two roses. I was a sole daughter of Hispanic parents, born in New York City. I could not surmise if it is because of my ethnic origins or due to diverse cultural upbringing that my life seemed to be chaotic at the onset. I grew up exposed to dysfunctional relationships where both parents exhibit frequent fights, one which led to a plane destined to Dominican Republic, to my...

The Story Of My Life

... The Story Of My LifeMy earliest childhood memories are of sunny mornings in our little thatched roof cottage, with mom at the stove making breakfast and our nanny at the kitchen table besides the fire, brandishing the toasting fork with a smoldering slice of freshly baked bread slices. Mornings used to be the same each day except on Sundays when Daddy was home. If I close my eyes now, I can still vividly smell the thick aroma of bacon and butter that permeated our cottage each morning, I can still clearly hear the dishes clattering in the sink and my little brother...
