The majority of business firms implement a customary performance evaluation in order to enhance the way employees carry out their work. This is usually done through the determination of the employees' career prospects, assessment of the employees' performance, and identification of the job-related challenges that employees encounter. If the companies are able to maximize and take advantage of an employee's abilities and address an employee's weaknesses, then the company could attain its objective of having greater efficiency with less difficulty.

Employees have different perspectives on performance evaluations. In the view of some employees, performance evaluation provides them a chance to speak his/her mind with respect to his/her career objectives and requirements. For other employees, performance evaluation is similar to a school report card and consequently determines one's incentives. An appraisal is a strategy to appreciate and highly regard an employee's performance (Montgomery, 1989). Since human resources are crucial resources a company, good performance of employees can be considered as the most significant attainment of a company objective.

There are multinational companies that carry on their business in Hong Kong because it is a strategic location for these global enterprises. Hong Kong is very conducive to business in terms of economy, labor relations, growth, and culture. In an organization with a diverse culture, the vital aspect of achieving success is the manner by which the employer enhances and optimizes the productivity of the employees. The examination of an employee's perception of performance appraisal could help in making performance appraisal effective.
