July 20th, 2007 Residency Program Director, I deem it a great pleasure, to put forth a letter of recommendation for Dr. Xia, AAMC ID 12648923, who had waived the right to view this communication. My knowledge of Dr. Xia is based primarily on the daily interaction and close observation of her work, during the months of June and July 2007. She was undergoing her observership with me at St. Margaret Hospital of the University of Pittsburg Medical Center where I was the physician in service, in the Department of Hematology and Oncology. I found Dr. Xia to be highly motivated as well as dedicated with zeal to excel, in both basic and clinical medicine. It was evident that she was both creative and productive because she had published 9 peer review journals during her PhD study. She created a great impression, when in seven months she was certified by the ECMFG with score of 93 percentile in Step 1 and 2 of the USMLE. I was impressed by her attitude of curiosity towards gaining new knowledge and her commitment to independent study. She was always interested in going through the latest medical literature for current trends on diseases and their treatment. She was also conscientious about her work and exhibited sound knowledge and judgment in patient care. Dr. Xia proved to be a highly industrious worker. She assisted me at the St. Margaret Hospital serving mostly cancer and hematological patients from a variety of cultural backgrounds. In the inpatient setting, Dr. Xia worked with a team, caring for patients undergoing both diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Dr. Xia spent ample time learning every detail of patients’ problems, the care given and their progress. She was also capable of applying her knowledge analytically to solve complicated problems and always came up with good solutions. As a result of her previous clinical training, she displayed a smart clinical aptitude and sophistication in demonstration. Right through her observership, Dr. Xia got along very well with the medical team. She showed deep concern and compassion and was always willing to help others. She was neat and meticulous and displayed an excellent bedside manner. To sum up Dr. Xia, I would like to say that she has tremendous strength on both the personal and academic front and has all what it takes, to be a fine physician and make a success of her medical career. I strongly recommend Dr. Chang Xia for residency training in your program without any reservation. Due to the great volume of applications received, our program selects only 2 to 3 applicants per month for an observership interview. It was during this interview that I had first met Dr. Xia Chang. I observed that she had a very pleasant personality and spoke fluently in good English. She is an extremely well educated person not only in medicine but also in the field of research. During her two months stay, Dr. Xia showed exceptional enthusiasm by attending the department journal club, case conference and lectures for fellows and residents. She also actively participated in ward rounds both in the morning and afternoon and took part in clinical discussions and debates. Her questions as well as answers were interesting and thought provoking which contributed a lot to the discussions held on “Treatment Plans”. She also participated in the Fourth Year Medical Student Critical Care Medicine Elective held at the Peter M. Winter Institute for Simulation Education and Research (WISER), a world class multidisciplinary training and research facility. She showed great interest by spending an hour every day, for two weeks in the simulation center, to practice on how to treat life threatening problems in a simulated environment. She demonstrated very effective leadership in crisis situations, reflecting her solid knowledge of medicine and exceptional ability to judge. Throughout her Observership, Dr. Xia proved that she was an excellent team player by getting along very well with physicians, residents and other nursing staff. She always exhibited concern and compassion and a willingness to do her best for the patients. Due to hospital regulations, Dr. Xia was unable to provide direct patient care during her observership, yet it is very evident that she is a highly motivated and diligent worker. Therefore, I am convinced that given the opportunity, she would definitely render good service in the first year resident role. Since I had the opportunity to work closely with Dr. Chang for the past five years, I am in a position to comment accurately on her capabilities. Five years ago, she had approached me about rotation in my laboratory for a month and it was during this period Dr. Xia demonstrated her ability and skill to work independently with great creativity and enthusiasm. The methods and conditions she employed were so good, that they are used in my lab even today. After she had passed the qualification exam at the end of the second year of our program, I began supervising her progress as her committee member. Every semester, I attended her departmental seminar and found her to be a highly industrious and productive student. Her presentations are always logical and her problem solving abilities are exemplary. Chang had a pleasant disposition and was good at creating common ground with the other lab members and share their mutual interests. I am not surprised, that at the end of her graduate study, she stood first and also co-authored 9 journal papers and three conference abstracts. After her graduation she is now preparing a first author manuscript, which is under revision for publication. This illustrates her high level of motivation. For two years she worked as a pediatric resident and has earned the distinction of a superb graduate student with solid background in medicine. Her presentations in our weekly journal, about the important advances in medicine have given her great recognition. Her commitment to education is highlighted, when she assisted me as a teaching assistant for two semesters. She displayed a very positive attitude and interacted effectively with other faculty members. She was an excellent TA and fulfilled her role to the very best, even while completing her own projects in the lab with favorable results. Her attitude demonstrates her exceptional organizational skills. Dr. Xia is an excellent team player with impressionable interpersonal skills. She consistently displayed a very congenial and friendly attitude which attracted many of her colleagues who wished to collaborate with her.
