Despite the several advantages of affirmative action, there are considerable overheads that the positive discrimination process comes with. In the recruitment of employees, affirmative action affects both the employer and the employee in a negative way. To the employer, the difficulty of forfeiting merit or talent for purposes of affirmative action is the main challenge. Regarding employees, some challenges result from this positive discrimination that can be difficult to manage.
First, when there is legislation that seeks to restore balances through affirmative action, merit and suitability of persons for a job take second place. Instead, individuals from minority groups are given chances within the organization as provided for by law. Such individuals could be qualified for the jobs or not. The main challenge that is going to arise is the ability of the persons to deliver in the positions assigned competently. Issues that might arise is the employee job satisfaction, and quality of job delivered.
Secondly, minority groups within organizations could find it difficult to adapt to the prevailing conditions. The main point of the challenge is usually the communication aspect within such organizations. The management of the organization might prefer to use a method of communication that is only understood by the majority within the organization. The issue in this case is a breakdown in the passing of instruction.
