The slave girl is reared in an atmosphere of licentiousness and fear.” (Jacobs Ch. 9) explain The slave girl falls easy prey to the sexual advances of her master who has every right to do with her what he pleases. The slave whether black or white was a helpless victim of the cruelty of the master or mistress and there was no law to protect them from the degradation of the treatment meted out to them.

In some cases the blacks themselves allowed access to their wives or daughters from the sheer effects of the brutal lashings that they underwent. As Jacobs drily remarks “few slaveholders seem to be aware of the widespread moral ruin occasioned by this wicked system” (Jacobs Ch. 9) Slaves were equated on par with pigs and cattle at slave auctions and Douglass remarks that “horses and men, cattle and women, pigs and children, all holding the same rank in the scale of being” adding “At this moment, I saw more clearly than ever the brutalizing effects of slavery upon both slave and slaveholder.

” (Douglass Ch. 8) Whether one looks at slavery from the prism of the slave or his owner, both these authors bring out the cruelty and helplessness of human beings caught in the web of slavery. 2. The cruelty of the slave owners is graphically described by both Douglass and Jacobs. The beatings that Henny whose hands had been injured in an accident endured morning noon and night, and the inadequate and insufficient food given to the slaves who worked long days and in all seasons point to the fact that slavery was far from benign.
