As Jacobs drily remarks “few slaveholders seem to be aware of the widespread moral ruin occasioned by this wicked system” (Jacobs Ch. 9) Slaves were equated on par with pigs and cattle at slave auctions and Douglass remarks that “horses and men, cattle and women, pigs and children, all holding the same rank in the scale of being” adding “At this moment, I saw more clearly than ever the brutalizing effects of slavery upon both slave and slaveholder.” (Douglass Ch. 8) Whether one looks at slavery from the prism of the slave or his owner, both these authors bring out the cruelty and helplessness of human beings caught in the web of slavery.
