to get more photographers in japan to feature in his exhibition and assist Arthur Drexler, who was MOMA’s curator and was expected to arrive in Tokyo. By the time he arrived in Japan, Ishimoto was widely versed with photography experience. He was not only going to focus on photography, but also architecture. Ishimoto Yasuhiro returned in japan after 14 years in the United States where he had trained in photography. He met Tange and the two became friends who were guided by their mutual passion for architecture.

When he proposed that Tange contribute an essay towards his upcoming book, Tange was very motivated and this evoked interest in him to work with Ishimoto in his new book. He saw this as an opportunity for him to publicize his architectural theory to a larger public in writing. He used the formal photographs taken by Ishimoto and arranged them is a persuasive ad focused way by collecting and cropping the photographs to explain his theory. Ishimoto’s collaboration with Tange led to an exceptional and outstanding relationship between photography and architecture.

Their book, Katsura: Tradition and Creation in Japanese Architecture, presented a new way of viewing Katsura’s imperial villa which led to increased circulation of Ishimoto’s images of Katsura in the united states, Japan and Europe. Tange had already made efforts to photograph the Katsura villa and use it as the base for modern architecture. The photographs taken by Ishimoto for the publishing of Katsura: Tradition and Creation in Japanese Architecture illustrated the architecture of Katsura villa as unembroidered which can be distinguished from the contemporary conventions in Japan.

His photographs were not in a significant way different from those of Ishimoto especially with regards to the focused landscape, materials and texture of the photographs.
