This exibition is one thing to read about Jews in history, but to actually see photos brought the people to life. There was a wall that followed the anti-Semitism in Europe from the first Jews to World War II. After reading and seeing about European Jews, I did not understand why the Jews were so hated. It did explain how the Nazi party was able to isolate and deport the Jews to the camps. Ghettos were part of European life for the Jews. The ramp going down to the Holocaust exhibits was lined with Nazi propaganda posters and other exhibits showing how the Nazis came to power. The different phases of the Final Solution were explained in graphic detail. More disturbing pictures were in pull out drawers. The worst part was the confines of the cattle car. I was only there for a short time, but the thought of being there for days terrified me. The Abyss was large screens showing what the liberators found. Each dead body or living skeleton was a person just like me. They had loved, hated, feared, hurt, and suffered. It is one thing to read six million people died, but to understand six million lives were snuffed out is totally different.        The righteous Gentile wall was a little more reassuring. The eternal flame was a fitting memorial. I played the “what would you do” interaction terminal. It made me think. I would like to say I would have saved Jews, but that is too easy to think. If everyone would have felt that way the Holocaust would not have happened.      Read More

Germany's Holocaust Memorial

...?Berlin Holocaust Memorial The Denkmal fur die ermordeten Juden Europes or Monument to the Murdered Jews of Europe was opened on May 12, 2005, the 60th anniversary of the fall of the Nazi regime and the end of the Second World War. The monument was designed by an American, Peter Eisenman, as a tribute to the Jews who died before and during World War II. It is located on what used to be the Ministry Gardens, next to a large complex of buildings which included the Reich Chancellery, Hitler’s main office. After the war, it was used to be part of the Berlin Wall. The memorial occupies a total space of 19,000 square meters (205,000 square feet) and consists of 2,711 unmarked gray stone slabs....

Holocaust Memorial

... My Personal Reaction to an Architectural Work Peter Eisenman’s video, Building Germany’s Holocaust Memorial, was about abeautiful monument called “The Field of Stelae”. In an aesthetic viewpoint, it is beautiful and even haunting. The structures are supposed to be reminiscent of fields blowing in the wind and I can see the amount of work it took to build it. Each structure is built in different heights. They are supposed to disorient the person walking through the memorial. I would like to visit the memorial to experience the fun of it. When I see it, I don’t know how to react. It is like walking through a distorted field of black blocks. I think the memorial is supposed to invoke fear, confusion, and a feeling of orderliness... . Holocaust Memorial Visit

...I. My like and dislike about the Memorial I like the idea that the Memorial was built to remember the suffering of the Jews during the Holocaust. Ina way, it is the Germans apology of their war crimes during the Second World War and an admission of its guilt. It is also unusual that a country would built a monument to remember its collective guilt becaue usually, countries only erect monument to honor its glory. I do not like the feel of the memorial. Its creepy especially when I am in between those two narrow cobbled stones. It also seems to look bland. II. The exclusivity of commemorating the Jewish victims For a race that was almost annihilated and made extinct by Hitler’s genocide, it is only proper that their suffering... be...

Building of the Holocaust Memorial

...less of a travesty than the murders of Jews. On the other hand, many point out that the main targets of the Holocaust were Jews, and the main ideology and iconography of the Nazi party were anti-Jewish, and it is thus important to single out the attacks on Jews against the attacks on everyone else, and perhaps give other people who were victims of the Holocaust their own memorials to honour their deaths. One of the most interesting sections of this video is the opinions of the original architect and designer of the memorial on what has been done around it. One of the biggest disappointments for the designer was the fact that other people chose to put an underground...

Building Germany's Holocaust Memorial

...Building Germany’s Holocaust Memorial Peter Eisenman’s memorial to victims of the Holocaust, located in Berlin, is composed of a series of concrete slabs of varying heights, placed in a grid pattern. The memorial has been the subject of a lot of debate, both from the Jewish citizenry and from German non-Jews as well. One of the reasons for this debate has been the fact that only Jewish people are included in this particular memorial. The commemorative structure makes no mention of the homosexuals, handicapped, or gypsies that were also murdered by the Nazis, not to mention those put to death for other reasons by the National Socialist Party. The problem with a memorial that deals exclusively with the remembrance of the Jews... is that it...

Germany's Holocaust Memorial

...Germanys Holocaust Memorial The German Holocaust Memorial is located at the center of Berlin, between Potsdamer Platz and Brandenburg Gate that is the border between West and Eat Germany. The memorial sits on a 19,000 square meters field, the size of a soccer field. The site is devoted exclusively to the murdered Holocaust Jews of Europe. The fact that the memorial site , only commemorate exclusively the Jewish victims of the Nazi, has in turn generated controversy, with some arguing out that many more thousands of non-Jews perished during the holocaust, and the fact that the...

Berlin Opens Holocaust Memorial

...the extermination of Jews, disregarding the countless other victims of Nazi oppression, including homosexuals and gypsies. A later monument to Nazi homosexual victims stands opposite the Jewish memorial. The visitors’ information center constructed under the stele is a compromise against the criticism that the entire implications of Holocaust and its history are not appropriately represented by the public sculpture aboveground. The information center ensures that the memorial combines the aims of memory and pedagogy. The accusation of unjust exclusivity also dogs the United States’ Holocaust...

World Trade Center Memorial

...World Trade Center Memorial Soon after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the first proposals were made to construct a tribute in remembrance of the victims. Even before the area known as Ground Zero had been cleared, there was already a good deal of public discussion as to what would be a proper memorial. Less than a year after the 9/11 attacks, a group called the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation was authorized to plan and create a World Trade Center Memorial. This corporation announced that there would be a competition to determine the design. The submissions would be judged by a panel made up primarily of artists, curators and...
