The U.S as well as most countries in the West acquired most of its oil supplies from Kuwait and therefore an Iraqi invasion would mean that this would be affected. Suffice to say that these countries had a lot to lose from the invasion. The U.S President at the time, Bush strongly condemned Iraqi’s actions and called for an unconditional withdrawal. A U.N. Security Council emergency session was called and it was unanimously agreed that Iraqi’s actions should be condemned1. The Council urged a cease-fire and demanded the withdrawal of Iraqi troops from Kuwait. Later on in the year, Iraqi announced Kuwait’s annexation and ordered the closing of all the embassies in the country. Subsequently, they began taking hostage U.S. and British citizens. President Bush publicly announced the deployment of U.S. troops. After the deployment, the president assembled one of the most extraordinary military and political coalitions in modern history, as military forces from Asia, Europe and Africa, as well as the Middle East combined forces to fight the Iraqi military2.
