The book is generally enchanting and draws the reader to crave more from the book. The book begins by describing a scene at a printing shop back in the year 1787. The description goes along stating that there is the presence of 12 men in the shop gathered unanimously to discuss and try to attain a common goal, the abolition of slavery. Slavery had been one of the most pressing issues in the United Kingdom and the suffering that the people were going through was one of the reasons for the convening of the meeting at the printing shop.
The first section of the book is referred to as the world of bondage. In this section of the book, Adam goes ahead and explains the various life conditions that the British people had to go through. In the section, he explained the manner in which the people had to work in plantations as laborers while receiving minimal or no wage at all. This was very discriminating as most of the people there had their own families and relied solely on that job as a means to feed them. The section also describes the many dreams and aspirations that the people had for a greater future.
There was the dreaming of a future with no form of bondage. Where people could be able to travel freely and grow their own crops. The people dreamt of a time where slave trade, which was one other major characteristic of the general slavery, could end and the world remains one generally peaceful place. In the section, Adam describes the manner in which the Guinean coin used to trade for gold (Hochschild 19). The second section of the book is described or rather referred to as ‘From tinder to flame’.
This is the section in the book where he describes the real efforts made in ensuring that the slavery was abolished finally. Here, Adam names the people that had the major impact at ensuring that there was the spread of the revolution process. Adam names one of the men, James Clarkson, as a graduate who was fast at organizing and carrying out advocacy missions for human rights. The second person he mentions is Granville Sharp. Sharp was one of the most charismatic leaders of all time and had an upper hand in the abolition of slavery.
This was due to his high amounts of social skills that he bore and hence people in society were fast at listening to his ideas. There is further explanation of the manner in which these activists together with their counterparts ensured that people freed from bondage. Adam explains the way they created public relation campaigns. They could go around motivating people to complain to the authorities of the manner in which they were treated and that they required better treatment (Hochschild 129).
One of the activists, James Somerset went on for a trial where he stated that it was not in line for the people in England to receive treated in the crude manner that they were being treated. Due to this, he sought a trial that would have all the people, whether immigrants or visitors that visited England free from any form of bondage or slavery work. The third section of the book referred to as “A whole nation crying with one voice”, is one of the most acclaimed parts of the book. This section of the book majorly focuses on the political form of the struggle and the manner in which the government and respective authorities were involved in the struggle.
It is in this section that the population that was suffering from bondage came out strongly to refuse mistreatment. This is at
