Occupational and Public Health in the USA 1) Why do you wish to study in the program (occupational and public health)? What influenced your decision to apply to the program? First and foremost, I am genuinely interested to work as an occupational health and safety specialist. I am immensely enthusiastic to study in the program since Ryerson University provides a structured academic approach by offering students a common core of course modules for the first year of study. The approach would assist freshmen in discerning the area of specialization that students eventually would pursue: either in Public Health and Safety or Occupational Health and Safety. Honestly, I believe the academic thrust would enable students to subsequently affirm which particular stream would perfectly fit personal and professional goals. Concurrently, I envision pursuing a life-long career in occupational health and safety as it is observed to be a dynamic and challenging endeavor. I strongly believe that by gaining the theoretical framework for the program, I would eventually develop the crucial skills set that would enable me to become an occupational health and safety specialist who would assist organizations and other work practitioners to focus on maintaining and sustaining a safe, secure, and health work environment. What influenced your decision to apply to the program? My previous entry to Ryerson University in 2011 through the Business Management program was a challenging experience. The struggle confirmed that the program does not fit my personal and professional goals. As such, I had to seek the professional assistance of the university’s guidance counsellor to determine the program that would match my personal and professional preferences. As such, the results of the career path evaluation generated the Occupational and Public Health program as the most appropriate course to pursue. These challenges which became a learning experience, as well as the intention to become a productive citizen influenced my decision to enter the program. 2) Are there factors that you believe are important/pertinent to the consideration of your application, especially in our review of your academic performance at the secondary and/or post-secondary level? If yes, please explain. Yes, I was placed in Permanent Program Withdraws (PPW) from Business Management program at Ryerson University due to bad grades. I was first enrolled into Business Management program in 2011 and was dismissed from the program in April of 2015. My entry into the Business Management program was actually undertaken with a half-hearted commitment. I was keen on becoming a business practitioner with the perception that there are immense opportunities for business management graduates in contemporary times. However, while pursuing the program, I was also employed full time which was deemed to be crucial to support my education as well as my cost of living. The challenge of balancing family and personal responsibilities, work obligations, and academic requirements became an increasingly difficult strain. Since it was my first experience trying to juggle work and academic pursuit, the performance for both endeavors eventually became dismal. In retrospect, I acknowledged and realized that I could not be exemplary in these three endeavors, despite my best intentions. As such, compliance with my academic responsibilities suffered the most. Despite the placement to the PPW from Business Management program, I am still committed to pursue the program found to match my personal and professional goals – the Occupational and Public Health program. Likewise, I recognize that I need to be productive to be able to contribute to my family’s means of living, as well as to be supportive of personal needs. In addition, I believe that I would like to be part of a public organization’s as an occupational health and safety specialist to assist in minimizing injuries, illnesses, and fatalities on work settings; as well as endeavor to prevent to occurrence of any of these work-related accidents by suggesting recommendations through policy-making and the development of more effective strategies and control measures, as needed. 3) If you are a current/previous Ryerson student seeking readmission or reinstatement, please provide an outline of how you plan to achieve academic success upon re-entering the program. Upon re-entering the university through the intended program, I would endeavor to achieve academic success through the following plan of action. First, since previous experience has confirmed that I could not juggle work with academic pursuit. Therefore, I have already quit my full time job so that I could focus my efforts entirely on meeting the academic requirements of the program. The savings I generated from the full-time employment would be used to pursue the intended program. Likewise, my parents have signified their commitment to assist in financially supporting my educational needs. In addition, I plan to adhere to complying with the requirements of each course module in specifically defined time frames. I would be more focused on reviewing course requirements as detailed in each syllabus and comply with undertaking reading assigned materials and submitting course projects as itemized. To assist me in doing these, I would actively seek group or peer support in academic programs or even clarify areas in course modules that need verifications from the assigned instructors. I have acknowledged that the university provides students much needed administrative and academic support systems which I could tap to assist in improving my academic performance and in sustaining an above-average to excellent academic achievement target. Finally, I would regularly monitor the progress of my academic performance through documenting the grades received in various module requirements. By doing this, I could apply needed interventions to correct any weaknesses and give me the opportunity to improve my rating. Overall, I affirm that through a more-focused stance in my academic pursuit, I would significantly improve my academic performance in the Occupational and Public Health program. Whenever I would encounter challenges in compliance with any of the course requirements, I would immediately seek support from academic personnel, peers, and from the instructors to direct me towards the appropriate path. I am confident that by taking away all the distractions that caused my low academic performance previously during my pursuit of the Business Management program from the university, I would immensely improve towards attainment of academic success.
