This essay declares that the drug menace and the increasing crimes are together wreaking havoc on our society. This situation has become much more critical because of the solid evidence given by the researchers that there is a steady relationship between drug abuse and the growing crime rate. This is evident as we often hear about sporadic violence occurring in those neighborhoods of our cities that have acquired a reputation for being drug joints of the city. The relationship stems from the fact that there is competition among several drug mafias to capture the drug markets for which they do not fret about using violence.

This paper concludes that there may not exist a linear relationship between drugs and crime, still, some kind of relationship exists between the two. Thus, whether a crime is committed under the influence of drugs or whether it is committed to getting the money to purchase these substances, should be counted as a drug-related crime. Hence to reduce crime rates and do so among the youth, it is of utmost importance that, the proliferation of drugs in society has to be controlled.

How much the crime rate will be brought down by this effort cannot be fully ascertained but it is certain to have a positive impact on society as a whole. Although this might involve some additional expense from the government exchequer, this can be sustained, as the social cost of drug abuse and the resulting crimes is also very high.
