Applying for a Dental School Notion of ‘Five Lucks’ plays a vital and significant role in lives of Korean people, as it brings posterity, brotherhood, pleasure, satisfaction, and happiness altogether. In specific, these five lucks are referred as a Korean having lots of posterity, growing old together, dining with guests, being buried at a propitious site, and giving a happy smile with healthy teeth. In this regard, healthy teeth and smiles are one of the most imperative elements in people’s lives, especially in the Korean culture. Since I know that I have passion for souls, to cater for them physically and in all areas of life, I know this can be achieved effectively as a dental doctor, which will facilitate people in acquiring their five lucks. My inspiration towards the dentistry developed after an old friend of my mother fascinated me with her profession that helped a number of poor people in Korea. Her passion for the job was contagious and humane. After witnessing how she treated her patients, how she examined their whole body before examining their teeth, how she was treated with utmost respect by her patients, I gained profound respect for the profession. In other words, my mother’s friend has been able to develop the similar passion in my personality that has now a great concern for others. Being an adventurous person, I have always liked to explore new places. I will be making this quest real by visiting many nations of the world to assist them with my dental skills to treat the underprivileged free of charge. Throughout my life, I have learned how to respect, oversee, and communicate closely with people from diverse backgrounds. In addition, I had the opportunities to lead people at work, as well as, at school, which I acquired with full responsibility. I have worked as a florist, wedding planner, translator, cashier and host. In all the mentioned jobs, personal communication was essential for efficient business operations. In other words, such professional associations provided me platforms to articulate my communication skills in an effective manner. In this regard, I will be able to work easily with patients and staffs. Moreover, I was the president of the Korean Engineering & Science Association, as well as, the Korean Science Association. Lastly, I played dynamic roles in the Korean Economics Student Association and the UW-Madison Pre-Dental Society. Overall, I have been in positions where I have had responsibilities for both companies and the customers. I understand what it takes to effectively run a business or organization and also understand and respect people. During my stay at the UW-Madison, I was lucky to grab couple of opportunities to carry out research in different labs. In specific, Dr. Richard Amasino of the department of biochemistry allowed me to work as a work-study student in his laboratory, which resulted in the enhancement of my scientific knowledge regarding the gene cloning and DNA. Moreover, I improved my management skills, as was given the chance to manage the sampling procedures in the laboratory. Furthermore, my stay at his laboratory enriched my understanding regarding the mechanisms of floral induction through participation during the characterization of epigenetic gene expression related to the development of plant, and its related processes. Dr. Ahna Skop’s laboratory in the Genetics Department was the second experience that I gained at the UW-Madison, where I worked on embryonic development. Specifically, the process of cell division or cytokinesis was researched by an independent project at her laboratory, which augmented my understanding regarding the genetic processes. Additionally, identification of BAR domain proteins was also performed by a genetic screen with the help of a lab technician and some graduate students that allowed me to understand people from diverse backgrounds working for one purpose. We were interested in identifying factors that would assemble at the plasma membrane prior furrow formation. Numerous hours were spent during the process, which involved picking of 1mm nematodes from plate to plate and counting dead embryos. Steady hands and sharp eyes contributed efficiently during the work, as it is quite difficult to spot the embryos in the sea of bacteria. Furthermore, I got the chance to participate in public speaking and quantitative analysis, which was another learning experience in the laboratory. I have gained tremendous respect for scientific research, and it has given me the insight to realize the passion for work and welfare of people.
