This method is preferred because it is non invasive, easily reproducible and rapid. This investigation is aimed at finding out the uses of ultrasound in the management of thyroid cancer, particularly basing on how oncologists apply this technique to patients with thyroid cancer. It will also attempt to analyze the trends in prevalence of thyroid cancer cases. For effectiveness, a variety of equipment and methods will be employed. Other people have also documented facts about thyroid cancer and ultrasonography.
Milas M, Stephen A and Berber E have published an article, which outlines the application of ultrasound in thyroid cancer therapy. It is applied in the guidance of fine needle aspiration (FNA) of thyroid nodules, surveillance of recurrent thyroid nodules after the operation and the localization of thyroid lesions. Ultrasound can also be used to diagnose other diseases of the thyroid gland and lymph nodes. Another article that illustrates the use of this technique in patients with thyroid cancer is written by Marqusee E and Benson C.B. These uses of ultrasound are also documented by other authors like Kouvaraki M.
A and Shapiro S.E in their article where they explain the role of preoperative ultra sounding technique in the surgical management of patients with thyroid cancer. Davies L. . and Pizzocaro A. Here, the two authors also pointed out that the presence of two or more ultrasound features portray an increased probability of malignancy occurrence. To carry out this investigation successfully, various methods were applied in the process. This involved data collection from selected hospital records and credible oncology departments.
To obtain the population of study, patients and oncologists were randomly selected to provide information. The sample population was informed of their role in the process, with emphasis on the voluntary nature of their participation. Survey method was used to get information from the study sample. Information was acquired from them through the use of questionnaires, both open and closed. Collection of information also involved open group discussions which were captured by audio and video tapes.
Information collected here involved the uses of ultrasound and conditions when ultrasonography is applied. Also obtained were the ultrasound images from oncologists, with permission from the patients. These data were collected and analyzed by the authors; John I. Lew and Carmen C. Solorzano. The recorded information was transcribed and made easy to understand. Data obtained from oncologist database was used to find out the prevalence rate of thyroid cancer, and then the rate was compared to those in the previous years to estimate the trend.
The significance of ultrasound in management of thyroid cancer was established beyond doubt. Many oncologists today depend on this technique to facilitate diagnosis of thyroid cancer, in surgical therapy and also in post operation therapies. Apart from the many uses of ultrasound that have been discussed earlier, additional uses obtained from this
