Same-Sex Marriage Issues - Essay Example

Should same sex marriage be encouraged? Same sex marriage is a controversial topic across the world. Even in highly advanced societies like America, there are a lot of supporters and critics of same sex marriage. Human sexuality is a controversial topic at present because of the newly developed concepts such as same sex marriage, lesbianism and gayism. Sexuality is associated with all living things and it happens normally with males and females. However, many of the people in the modern societies think differently about human sexuality. For them, same sex marriage and homosexuality are acceptable practices in life. Traditionally, sex is assumed as a divine act by the religions. It is performed for the purposes of reproduction and psychological pleasure. Religions never support same sex marriage because of faith related reasons. Critics of same sex marriage argue that the major purpose of marriage is to make children and to sustain the human life in this world. For them, same sex marriage will cause immense threat to the sustainment of human life on earth since homosexuality will never succeed in producing offspring. On the other hand, there are many people who like to have a partner from the same sex. Such people argue that the people should have the freedom and the rights to select their partner based on their preferences. In their opinion, marriage is a socially constructed phenomenon rather than a biologically constructed one. For the advocates of same sex marriage, the major purpose of marriage is to derive pleasure from sexual life rather than making offspring. In short, there are plenty of arguments in favour and against same sex marriage. The call for legalization of same sex marriage is increasing day by day. “As of Sep. 15, 2010, gay marriage is allowed in five US states (MA, CT, IA, VT, and NH) and the District of Columbia whereas 30 states have constitutional amendments banning gay marriage” (Procon.org). It is necessary to analyse various dimensions, beliefs and arguments related to same sex marriage before encouraging or discouraging same sex marriage. Modern generation has liberal views about sexuality and marriage. For them, the purpose of sexuality is not reproduction but psychological pleasure. In other words, many of the people in the modern generation consider sexual activities just for psychological pleasure alone. Under no circumstances, this belief cannot be accepted since nature has attached psychological pleasure to sexual activities in order to encourage the reproduction process. In other words, natural laws give more importance to reproduction rather than psychological pleasure in sexual activities. Therefore, same sex marriage can be considered as a concept against the natural laws and hence it cannot be encouraged. “Obviously, gay parents will raise gay children, since straight parents only raise straight children” (Djwudi.). Supporters of same sex marriage argue that all natural laws were formulated for the betterment of human life and there is no harm in modifying such laws. However, past experiences have proved beyond doubt that anything that worked against the natural laws may not survive long. In other words, nature has better knowledge about its resources. In other words, only creator knows the secrets behind his creations. Creations can never be superior to the creator. For example, computers are the creations of human. Computers or artificial intelligence can never be considered as superior to the natural intelligence of human. In short, natural laws are formulated for the survival of living things on earth. Working against such laws would bring more harm than good in future. According to Bidstrup, “the benefit of gay marriage is the fact that the participants are discouraged from promiscuous sex”. However, this argument cannot be accepted fully. It should be noted that the commitments among the in a same sex marriage need not be the same as that in a heterosexual marriage. Heterosexual marriages are normally taking place based on the religious customs and beliefs. Religions usually teach the partners that marriage is taking place in the heaven and it is blessed by the God. Under such circumstances, extramarital relationships are considered as a sin by the religions. Only believers are getting married, based on the religious customs. They are keen on observing the religious norms in a marital relationship. Religious norms never advocates sex with multiple partners and hence sex diseases associated with crazy sexual life styles can be reduced up to certain extent. On the other hand, in same sex marriages, the commitments among the partners are less. It is possible for such partners to break their relationship or marriage any time they wanted since such marriages never tie them strongly because of the absence of children in such relationships. At the same time, normal sex has little meaning in same sex marriages. In normal marriages, sex is often performed even without the mutual agreement. Either the husband or wife, at times performs sexual activities mechanically in order to satisfy the partner. As a result of that, it would be difficult for the partners in heterosexual marriages to enjoy the sex equally well. It is a fact that mechanical sexual activities may create frustrations in the minds of the partners and the possibility of breaking or relationship cannot be ruled out in such cases. Same sex marriage destroys morality and encourages crazy life styles even though in countries such as Canada, it has already been legalized. Many of the Americans do not have any problems in supporting the rights of homosexual couples even though they oppose same sex marriages. In American military, Don’t Ask Don’t Tell policy is following. A new chapter now begins for the nations military. Gay and lesbian service members previously discharged under DADT have the opportunity to re-enlist. Gay and lesbian Americans eager to serve the country but not willing to compromise who they are as individuals will, for the first time ever, be able to openly join. And brave men and women currently serving will have the freedom to come out and be honest with their comrades about who they are and who they love (The Human Rights Campaign) In other words, US military personnel can engage in same sex activities and they are not responsible to reveal it to anybody under normal circumstances. Normally, there are no problems in allowing homosexuality among the people working in military services. However, it should not be forgotten that discipline is the key of success for any military troops in the world. Allowing homosexuality in military life would force the soldiers to concentrate more on sex activities and less on their duties. On the other hand militaries that disallow homosexuality will be more disciplined and such militaries can accomplish their missions easily. Supporters of same sex marriage often argue that the vacancy of children in their family life can be filled with the help of adoption. It is a fact that couples in same sex marriages can be adopted as many number of children they want. However, such children cannot claim their parents as their biological mother and father. It is impossible for a couple in same sex marriage to provide the same love and care to a child as its true parents do. Moreover, adopted children forced to get care and love only from two females or from two males. In other words, such children get either two father’s love or two mother’s love. In any case, he/she will fail to get either fathers or mothers love. Mother’s love cannot be substituted for father’s love and vice versa. In other words, mothers love +mothers love cannot be considered as equivalent to mothers love and fathers love. In short, adoption of children in same sex marriages often ends up in big social problems. To conclude, same sex marriages cannot be encouraged under any circumstances because of its potentials to cause immense damages to nature and its life.
