The paper discusses on the various aspects of gender mainly biology and roles in various institutions such as marriage, the workplace and education where women become enormously differentiated from males. Women have certain biological aspects and roles which define how they get viewed by the society. This paper discusses in length the effect of gender and its impact on women. Gender signifies a vital part of the present society. It refers to the social characteristics of being male or female and the opportunities that tag along with belonging to either sex (Connel, 2009).

Gender views at determining the relations between men and women or boys and girls. The characteristics and relationships that occur due to gender get socially defined and become learnt through the socialization process. Gender roles and characteristics depend on society and may change over time (Germon, 2009). Gender designs what becomes allowed, expected and valued of a woman or man in a certain setting. Gender is a social construction that arise from day to day social interactions. There are several aspects of gender which differentiate women from men in terms of their biology and roles.

Biology Women are physically different from men. Sexual differentiation among women is evident primarily in terms of their possession of the sexual hormone oestrogen. It defines their physical attributes such as their genitalia and ability to reproduce. The hormone oestrogen, also determines the female body shape (Canary, 2006). The release of this hormone majorly impacts on the physical appearance of females distinguishing them from males. These hormones also determine female behavior. Females also possess two X chromosomes within their cells as compared to males.

Individuals get assigned to certain gender upon birth dependent on the appearance of their genitalia. Female sex organs become primarily meant for reproduction and nurturing of infants. The female genitalia allows for women to be able to become pregnant and bear children. Female physicality is also evident in their body structure. Women are less masculine compared to males. Their body structure is more curvaceous in comparison to that of males. Women are vastly different to men in terms of physical endurance and strength (Lips, 2007).

Due to their body structure, women are weaker compared to males. Differences in strength and endurance arise from the genetic and hormonal make up within the female body. The genetic and hormonal make up of women contribute significantly to influencing their behavior. Women are more caring and less aggressive compared to men. Their hormones trigger a sense of nurture unlike that of men which triggers aggression (Barash and Lipton, 2002). This hormonal differences play out since women tend to be more emotional, while males get interested in objects rather than people.

These hormones in women also make female babies respond more quickly to human voice than male babies. The brain ability among women also varies remarkably to that of males. Girls are better than boys when it comes to hearing high frequencies as well as being more vocal than boys. Girls also perform better than boys when it comes to reading and vocabulary tests. Roles Women get assigned different gender roles in different societies (Ashcraft, 2005). Through the assignment of these gender roles, women get to be defined from other members of a society.

As time and the world progresses, a significant shift in women gender roles gets noted. Most roles nowadays get shared between the family and society and do not get dominated by gender. Gender still defines certain roles of women in institutions such as marriage, workplace, and education.
