It can be proved that in electrical circuits the instant power is p(t)=v(t)×i(t). In this equation v(t) and i(t) are instant voltage and current as functions of time t. In alternating current (AC) circuits all these terms are constantly varying. The value of the major interest in the electrical sector is a standard value of p (t) over an entire AC cycle.Power triangleThis figure is known as real (active) power and is given in watts (symbol: W):Watts=average {v(t)×i(t)}It shows that real work carried out by an electric current or actual energy used by weight to generate for instance heat, light, or motion.

Electrical systems usually have inductors and capacitors, which are known as reactive components. Ideal reactive apparatus do not disperse any energy, but they acquire currents and generate voltage drops, which create the sense that they really do. This "imaginary power" is known as reactive power. Its standard value over a complete AC cycle is zero as a result of the phase shift involving voltage and current. It does not add to the total transfer of energy, but flows back and force between the source and the load and puts on a heavier weight on the utility.

Reactive power is computed in Volt-Amps-Reactive (VAR). As opposed to the wattage that stands for the average value, numerically VAR stands for the amplitude of the instant reactive power. In addition to reactance, real electrical structures also encompass non-linear mechanisms such as rectifiers, which alter current waveform and establishes current harmonics. All these harmonics except for the essential one, do not alter the value of the total energy transfer. The combination of real, alteration, and practical power make up clear (or total) power, measured in Volt-Amps (VA):VA= V×IIn this formula, V and I are root-mean-square (RMS) figures of voltage and currentDEFINITION OF POWER FACTOR (PF)PF by description is the ratio of real to visible power:PF=W / VAThe value of PF is significant to do the calculation: W=VA×PF, where PF is in decimal.

Similarly, to translate watt to VA power through the application of the formula: VA=W/PF.
