FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCE According to “The New Normal” by Guzman, More women choose to cohabite and live with men first without marriage. He claimed that more of those relationships are lasting longer. The cohabitation has become more acceptable to many individuals in a long-term as people create relationship without a legal document. (Guzman, 2013).Cohabitation has been on the rise because of the media influence. The media has created a perception through soups and other movies that one out of two marriages is destined to fail which is not true because only the unhappy rather than happy endings are brought out in these movies.

Many individuals claim that the cohabitation is vital for the testing of the partner. This makes people to live together to test and see if they are meant for each other. This enables somebody character to be studied and therefore a decision will be made if the individuals will end up being a couple. This is not healthy as individuals always are monitoring one another scrutinizing one another to look for justifiable reasons for separation. Cohabiting has the importance of saving the finances. It is economical for two individuals who have not fully established to come together and share the little they have without commitments of marriage.

Cohabiting cannot be beneficial as a marriage. According to psychologists, marriages have physical and mental benefits. A person often shows desire to settle in marriage in long run even if he/she is cohabiting. According to various religion and faith, cohabiting is considered as sin as people tend to engage in sexual relationship before they are married. (Mark, 2009) I think individuals should use the steps to marriage by engaging first. Individuals should be in an engagement for long to understand one another before entering into marriage.

Ordinarily, cohabiting has no commitment. This is because it is not a covenant as marriage. Marriage is a covenant and people live with commitment. Therefore families are keen to live in peace and harmony.Works CitedGuzman, M. (2013). The new normal: Cohabitation on the rise, study finds.
