Sometimes religion and spirituality can enhance and empower students to perform well academically or to find strength and moral guidance in life, though this may be subjective and hard to identify empirically in studies. The effect of religion and spirituality may further affect academic performance on campus.Notre Dame De Namur University was founded in 1850. It is a Catholic school and was founded by the Sisters of Notre Dame. The total student enrollment is approximately 1970 people. The graduate program includes 700 students and the graduate school of business has over 200 students.
The university follows the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur hallmarks (2010) which insist that “.they value and implement community-building activities, both social and spiritual, between and among all members of their learning community. They devote time, space, and personnel in support of the individual's spiritual/personal journey; they welcome people to their community of diverse cultures, ethnicity, race, socioeconomic circumstances, gender, age, sexual orientation, and faith traditions.
The university develops educational programs which expand their knowledge and understanding of the diversity in their world community and which celebrate the richness of that heritage.” (Meaning of the Hallmarks, 2010).Notre Dame De Namur University is a Catholic university that prides itself on having an inclusive religious environment, but there is no study or evidence to confirm that the school is meeting the spiritual needs such as encouraging and nurturing people's relationship with God, prayer, spiritual quest, social justice, healing from hurt, spiritual/personal journey, and inspiration.
This paper discusses the spiritual and religious inclusiveness at Notre Dame De Namur University and investigates the satisfaction of the students’ spiritual and religious needs. The evaluation further assesses the students’ needs on campus related to religion and spirituality.
