ETHICAL RESEARCH CONCERNS ON CRIMINAL JUSTICE AND SECURITY MANAGEMENT Ethical research concerns on Criminal Justice and Security Management Ethics in some cases is regarded as moral philosophy or guidelines. They are the basic wrong and right guidelines in day to day life. In whatever we do, we can make moral judgment or assessment and verify how right or wrong it is. Through ethics we make moral choices especially in situations that catch us unaware. Therefore, ethics is employed in research to educate and monitor the scientist’s involved in conducting it to maintain certain level of moral conduct (be ethical.) Researchers need to ensure that there research is conducted within a morally and legally right framework (Jones & Bartlett, 2008). This involves reasoning when making decision, being knowledgeable and truthful in approach, or reporting and finally being considerate in ensuring the positive of the research outweighs the negatives. Thus, I cannot write this paper from the perspective of right and wrong .Whenever a group of people poses some power to influence the lives of others, ethical obligations becomes dictatorial. Ethical issues are authoritative in considering different courses of action, and as a potential for targeting criminal justices. Ethical concerns are virtually present in every field and psychological research included. In this regard, each and every researching body has to strike a balance between the scientific expectations and standards of its research and the human right issues that may result to violation of criminal justice system. Unfortunately criminal justice and criminology research involves dealing with humans and human behavior that is guided by the ethics (Jones & Bartlett, 2008). However when carrying out such research, several concerns have to come in such as: 1. Researcher should be aware that a single problem might generate so many unnecessary questions regarding the researcher’s conduct. 2. Being ethically sensitive is necessary but not sufficient in solving all the problems that might arise. 3. Ethical dilemma may cause conflict of values and interest that may force researcher to re-evaluate his/her priorities. 4. Concerns on the topic of the research and how it is conducted; putting personal and professional problems into consideration. It is therefore necessary that a researcher carrying out the research understand what is meant by ethics and its importance on the criminology researches. He should clearly understand the relationship between ethics and professionalism (Rendtorff, 2009). Helsinki declaration outlines that a good research as one which respects justice and its ethical should ensure that all the participants engage voluntarily and that their contribution should be for good of the society. Ethical based research should avoid unnecessary physical and mental suffering. The parties involved should be secure. To make this possible they, should make sure no serious injury or death is experienced in the course of duty (Thomas, 2003). In psychological research, to protect the public, it is necessary to use qualified personnel who must be prepared to terminate the experiment whose continuation may be harmful. Security management is a tricky area in which it becomes difficult to provide security while at the same time ensuring that the procedure is ethical and respects human right in a moral sense. An example is in a case where an individual is engaged in unlawful act and the police came in and employ excessive force in his arrest. This is unethical and only sufficient force is necessary to be used in putting the law breaker under arrest and charges against him/her can only come in court if proven guilty. However in their quest to moderate the suspect and protect the public and themselves, the police may be forced to use controllable force to control the situation. The degree of risk or danger of the research should not exceed the number participant. Computer safety management also experiences unethical issues in its quest to ensure convenient and properly managed system. In many cases, hackers get into systems and steal information or plot viruses that may destroy the given websites. That is an example of unethical behavior that lucks morals hence enough to create tension and insecurity. However ethical approach can be followed in managing or controlling such actions. In a society, unethical behaviors such as preaching hatred and tribalism can create insecurity that later develop into a big war. The morality or immorality of what we do is measured by the magnitude of its effect on the people we care about that also live around us (Warren, 2001). Ethical decision-making in criminal justice is certain. The decision maker has to ensure relevance before making the final decision. The ethical guidelines require that the researcher should ensure that adequate statistical and subject-matter expertise in both applied to any planned study in the psychological field. Therefore, it is unethical for somebody who is experienced on agriculture to undertaken research on a medical field where he/she has no expertise. In terms of responsibility, the ethical guidelines clearly states that a person should maintain personal responsibility for all the work bearing his/her name. Ethical consequence need to be employed in some research to meet the moral standards required. Controversial research topics such as gangs may sometimes create issues. For example, the researcher may be joining the gangs to get 1st hand information on an issue when collecting data. Is it an illegal undertaking taken with good intension? This is ethical biasness and such information should be reported to the police even though it might endanger the research. The researcher needs to be keen and ethically right in all the procedure he or she uses. Unfortunately some research may cause harm and lead to a criminal offence. Such research involves direct human contact and the target is regarded as victims. These types of research might result to the accused offender and the research causing harm which may either be physical, or psychological to the victim. Such injuries are common in applied or experimental types of research such as testing a new drug or testing weapon. If for example the research is an asexual orientation study; and the research body reveals the identity of the gays in the group, this information may result to the gays in the group being discriminated and result to social harm. The researcher should have initially considered such harm and recognize exposure of such private information violate the right of such people (Felkenes, 1987). Security justice and security management is characterized by many stakeholders. This is because many people have personal or public interests in the issues that directly affect them. The most likely stakeholders in Security justice and security management are the government and the public in general (Koslowski, 2000). The government has a duty to protect the rights of every citizen hence issues that deals with the justice have to be in the forefront in government policies. The public are the main stakeholders in criminal justice because any criminal justice research directly affects them. Therefore, you should not take any measure to force the outcome as this will compromise the validity of the analysis. This is because a good outcome will guarantee quality of the research (Koslowski, 2000). Professionalism remains a major aspect when dealing with psychological research such on criminal justice and security. Statistical methods and tools can be employed for social good or evil. As encouraged by the guidelines, professionalism is predicated on their use in socially responsible pursuits by morally responsible employers, governments, and societies. However, it is worth stating that statistical professionalism ceases to have ethical value if statistical application is morally liable. Cognitive theory is a very practical element in this field of research. It typically uses questions or problems to measure ability to learn quickly, reading judgment, and reasoning (Walton& Duska, 1998). Cognitive theory evaluates an individual’s potential to solve job-related limitations by providing information about their mental abilities; such as verbal or mathematical reasoning and other potentials like speed in recognizing letters of the alphabet. Although the primary goal of cognitive theory is to evaluate persons’ acquired reasoning abilities. It can also provide hypothetical achievement scores when distributed in evaluating the moral aspect of criminal justice and security management (Walton& Duska, 1998). In conclusion, ethics come in many things we are engaged in our day to day life and care need to be taken in balancing the ethical point of view and the dilemma on the ground. When carrying out various researches that involve other people, it is very important that we observe the ethical expectations in the society. In security management and criminal justice research, we should act within the expected provisions with the law and to avoid violating other people’s right. For example, a police officer on duty needs to know the limit of his mandate to ensure he does his arresting the ethical way. Ethics is so important within the society and when well respected, all the psychological, physical and social problems are solved. However, much still needs to be done in regards to ethical behavior in criminal justice and security management. Researchers in the field of psychology must see ethics as a social responsibility to which they are appreciative. Secondly, ethics will only find its place in a researcher that makes it its first priority (Walton & Duska, 1998). This can be done through the creation of relational expectations that work for the benefit of everyone. By creating a value-based culture the public, the society in general can improve through positive influences that bring about outside the courts of law. References AMERICAN STATISTICAL ASSOCIATION.
