Analytical Skill Building: To what extent has your work in this helped you to improve your critical reading, writing, and thinking skills? The ethics in the different walks of life like business, politics, biomedical and environment have improved my skills in critical reading, writing and thinking skills. Learning of these ethics has really helped me in a clearer and concise manner of thinking. I can more effectively communicate with others after having learnt above all ethics. My writing skills have also improved accordingly. When I write the reflection papers my writing has become powerful. My every word counts well. I can convey my idea in a fewer words and my points have become more clear. My analytical skills have accordingly improved with better strength and abilities. The business ethics have involved me in a variety of fictional case studies. When I have analyzed these fictional case studies of business ethics I have become capable of making responsible ethical judgments. Now I can understand the course materials in a much better way in the perspective of my own life experience (Martin, M.W. 2000). By participating in weekly seminars we had discussed the nature and significance of the philosophical studies of ethics and have worked to understand and applied a variety of ethical theories and perspectives to a lot of significant real world situations. Since we have done a lot of web research projects, these research projects have made me understand how to conduct research on the Internet. We have been able to share with our class mates on political, business, biomedical and environmental ethics and the issues that are involved in these topics and are of significant interest to us. Learning on these ethics has been able to provide additional opportunities to learn grow and develop many useful skills including conciseness in writing, clarity of ideas, depth of analysis and vastness of knowledge. We have always used these assignments as an affective vehicle for our writing and communication skills in our academic and professional settings. The business ethics have really refined and developed our abilities in making reasoned, responsible and valuable judgments about complex ethical situations. We have been able to articulate and defend our ethical theories without going into traditional dogmas and superstitions. Now we pay more attentions to listening the others and try to understand and appreciate the points of views of the others (Frederick, R.M. 1999). The ethical perspectives on political and environmental issues have reasonably refined our educational dialogues with or peers and greatly refined our believes. Our reflexive options have really done magic with our analytical skills in reading, writing communication and thinking. Had we not learnt these ethics our analytical abilities might have not been improved to such a great extent? Knowledge Acquisition: To what extent have you gained knowledge of important concepts, ideas, and perspectives through your study of the humanities? I have acquisitioned the knowledge about business ethics, political ethics, biomedical ethics and environmental ethics in a great and effective manner. There are many and varied fields of knowledge that have opened their horizons on my mind, experience and exposure. In the field of business ethics, I have learnt that how the effective, sustainable, healthy and dependable business relations are maintained between various businesses and between employers and employees. It is hearting to note that the corporate social responsibility has ushered into my mind as a comprehensive package of ethics comprising upon business, environment and bio-medics. The CSR involves business ethics that require that a business must be complaint with the environmental requirements of the local agencies or the federal government. The profits yields by the businesses must have a part and portion for the improvement of environment through its developmental projects (Williams, O.F. 2000). The businesses must pay the due taxes levies and other financial applications to the local and federal government and all the businesses must stop tax evasion and other corrupt practices with immediate affect. The salaries and perks and the recruitment ratio in the businesses must be gender balanced. It means that the women must have their equal in the jobs and salaries and they should not be discriminated against in any way. The businesses must also pay for the literacy projects and poverty elevation projects in the area wherever they are established. These are the environmental, social and gender responsibilities around the world. The biomedical ethics involve the good practices of ecology, biology in medical. The biomedical involves that the businesses should also und the projects like HIV AIDS, Polio and other endemic and epidemic diseases around the world (Lewis, A & Warneryd, and K. E 2002). On the political agenda the business ethics of politics require them to advance, protect and ensure the equal rights of citizens based on merit in all the job opportunities. The businesses must support the democracies in the world and they should be a part of the voice of larger population in the world for acquisition of civil rights, political rights, gender equality, freedom from disease, freedom from hunger and freedom from dictatorship. This is also a basic political ethic to be complied by all the businesses in the world that they should struggle promulgation of transparency, corruption free practices, good governance and equality of rights in all the societies of the world wherever these businesses are present either in manufacturing, distribution and goods and services (Shelton, K 1989). As far as the study of humanity is concerned both in the political science and sociology these above mentioned ethics have their theoretical and practical perspectives from which these are fostered, supported and developed. The corporate social responsibility of businesses is a greater paradigm that is available in the study of businesses from the perspective of politics, economy, environment, gender studies and sociology. These ethics are basically humanitarian in nature and are meant to ensure, conserve and promote the larger cause of humanity over the cause of capitalism. For instance all the businesses are required, as a matter of basic ethic that the businesses should not pollute environment of air, soil and water. The businesses should not be a part of ozone depletion. They should help make the environment cleaner, greener and better off. They should help in beautiful landscaping and plantation of more and more trees (Childress, J.F. 1997). The development of new business projects should not be allowed to cut down the already existing trees and should not be allowed to destroy the wild life and other useful animals of that area. The businesses should not be allowed to emit the smokes and other harmful fumes in the air. Rather the businesses are required to start and set-up new and fresh environmental projects and help in the national conservation strategies. Practical Application: To what extent have you learned how to connect course material to contemporary society and to your own life? The contemporary society can be worth living in when all the above ethics learnt through the course material are practically applied to our own lives. It is not only great but also very useful to know and apply these ethics to the practical issues of life. Everyone knows what a good business is. But, only a few people know as to what are the business ethics and how can these be applied in the practical life situations. The social and corporate responsibilities of businesses not only make the society happy and worth-living but also the profits earned from these businesses are not only legal and sustainable but also durable and enjoyable. When the taxes are paid by the businesses they become easy and enjoyable to deal with (Kuse, H 1998). When the gender balance is done in the business this provides equal and equitable opportunities for the female members of society. The practical application of business ethics is very useful and beneficial for the whole of society. It yields unrelenting fruits for the society. The corporate social responsibility of businesses when applied in the practical life leaves less people poor and sick. It wipes out the poverty, hunger and disease from society. As mentioned above, practical application of CSR takes away the ignorance, diseases, inequalities and violence from society. The business ethics are like a boon and bounty for a welfare oriented society. With the application of biomedical ethics it is possible for the society to live with originals, cheaper and non-spurious drugs from society. There can not be any fake medicines available on the shelves of the medical stores. The medicines can only be produced and sold after proper research and investigation. The human lives can not act as guinea pigs for the pharmaceutical industry in the world. Similarly, patients in the hospitals can have and can enjoy the best medical practices on part of doctors, surgeons and physicians around the world. The exploitation of the poor patients at the hands of these medical practitioners can finish forth with. The nurses and Para-medics can neither be exploited nor can they exploit by others. Biomedical profession is a very noble profession that is solely based upon moral ethics of humanity. This profession works with humanity and is meant for humanity. Therefore, its application in practical life can neither be denied nor can it be underestimated. A society is always full of good life when all the moral ethics of biomedical profession are honestly applied in the society (Bradley, P & Burls, A 2000). The political ethics are a rather more important and all-encompassing for the whole of the society. The transparency and good governance along with corruption free democracy in society are those basic ethics that when applied can really rid the society from all social evils and major vices from it. The politics is the mother of all professions and its importance over-rides all the other professions. The political ethics are nonetheless greater and larger in application. They are deeper and broader in results. All those societies where political ethics are observed these societies are bestowed with the bounties of rule of law and equality of rights for all the men and women in the society without regard to influence wealth, cast and creed, age and gender, color and religion. Therefore, the practical application of political ethics learnt through this course is larger in application and broader in benefits. As far as the application of environmental ethics in practical life, it is rather more interesting and enriching experience of a neater and cleaner, greener and sustainable, durable and happy way of life. This is extremely important that the application of environmental ethics in practical life makes life longer, happier and healthy. For instance when the environmental ethic of reduction at source of waste and toxic materials by the industry is applied it makes the environment cleaner and sustainable. When the businesses or members of the society plant more and more trees, this results in greener cleaner and fresh environment which is full of oxygen (Ashley, B.M. & O’ Rourke, K.D. 1997). Such practices eat out the carbon-mono oxide and carbon dioxide. The conservation strategies and practices help the wild life, birds, fish and other marine and aquatic creatures to keep and sustain the ecological balance of environment. This sort of environment is necessary for saving many creatures and species of plants and animals from extinction. When the industries and vehicles are not allowed to emit larger quantities of smoke and dust in this way the environment of air can be kept healthier and cleaner. If the industries are allowed to discharge their toxic affluent in the soils, this results in the deterioration of soils and drying of trees which ultimately disrupts the environmental balance in the society. In conclusion it can be safely said that all the ethics learnt in this course, when practically applied in the life can make this society greater and worth living. Because these are the ethics which show the successful pathways of life and their practical application can really make our lives happier and wealthy. Similarly by the unabated actions of the industries when they do not observe the environmental ethics of controlling their air and soil and water pollution, this would result into the rise in the temperatures of earth and unabated discharge of carbon dioxide. Ultimately this would result into the green house effect that would also lead to the depletion of ozone layer, droughts, floods, famines and bigger storms in the oceans. Ultimately the whole of the humanity would go on the natural path of destruction. We see that when the environmental ethics are not fully applied in the society today, this has resulted into the growth of poverty, hunger and disease around the world. Practically these are the direct result of non-application of environmental ethics in the businesses (Spann, G.A. 2000). Because, the temperature of the earth is rising, the seasons are getting disrupted, the rains and floods and droughts have become inconsequential to each other. This situation has resulted into inundating larger agricultural lands in the countries. The soil erosions are very common. The fertile soils are being deserted and rich forests are fast disappearing.
