Recent scientific investigation indicates that glacier has been vanishing around the globe and this offers a stark image of the rising temperatures. It is worth to note that glacial development takes place in areas of high snowfall with low temperatures that lead to faster snow accumulation than melting. The resulting snow becomes ice and moves slowly downhill. The literature review indicates that countries like scot land were shaped by glacial action as recorded from the last ice age which is estimated to have ended in the past 10,000 years. It is important to note that the force of glacier can significantly alter the shape of the landscape through its ability to cut deep valleys, corries carving eventually dumping large quantities of debris when melting (Knight, 2006). A close analysis of the modern Glasgow city and Edinburgh shows much past glacial movement that results in their contemporary glacial landforms.

Although such several glacial actions have been there in the past, it is taking another direction in terms of the rate of melting. It is now common knowledge that the glacial retreat rate has dramatically increased in the last decades. This is associated with the increasing trend in local and global temperatures and this is being experienced by most of the continents. Major scientific predictions give an elaborate possibility of melting ice from glaciers becoming the greatest cause of sea-level rise during the 21st century. This is already posing a significant threat to global leaders and humanity in general. There is an estimated rise of sea level in a range of 100 to 240 mm by the year 2100 as a result of the accelerated ice cap and glacial melt around the world (Casper, 2010). There is an indication of glacial size increase in some parts of the world like in Norway due to the high rate of snowfall that is consistent with temperature change hence keeping the rate of melting lower than the rate of accumulation. ...Download file to see next pages Read More

The Effects of Global Warming and Its Causes Global Warming Introduction The increase in the average earth’s atmosphere andthe oceanic temperatures is referred to as Global warming (Silver, 2008). The temperature changes vary from region to region around the earth. The fluctuations in the global temperatures occur naturally. However, has been it is realized that the average global temperatures are increasing at a higher rate. Simpson (2008) notes that for 10 years since 1990, the hottest years to be recorded occurred. Scientists predicted that the average temperatures to be experienced in the U.S. could increase by 3 to 9 degrees by the end of the century...

...Glacial Retreat Evidence of Global Warming... Glacial Retreat Evidence of Global Warming... Global warming Global warming is the gradual increase of the earth’s surface and ocean temperatures. For many centuries, the surface temperature of the earth has been rising, altering the physical structure and the weather conditions of the earth. While the effects of global warming are slowly but surely making themselves known, scientists have proven that these effects are quickening the longer we brush off the threat that global warming presents. By continuing to ignore the threats that come with global warming, we are not only putting the world at risk of destruction, but the human race as well. With the implementation of information taken from...

...Glacial Retreat Evidence of Global Warming... Glacial Retreat Evidence of Global Warming... Warming Introduction: The recent decades have been plagued with rising concerns regarding the drastic change in climates, across the globe. Scientists have continuously attributed such changes to a phenomenon called “global warming”, and have conducted significant research to prove the validity of their arguments. However, recently these arguments put forward in favor of global warming, have been challenged by skeptics, who dismiss the whole phenomenon as a “myth” or a man-made controversy. Thus, while on one hand, there are groups of scientists who claim that global warming is indeed real, and support it with facts and empirical evidences; on the other...

Global Warming ...The term Global Warming refers to the continuous increase in earth’s average temperature since 1950’s due to human activity and environmental deterioration by various harmful chemicals which are being added to the environment, mainly due to the burning of the fossil fuels. Another term that needs to be defined along with Global Warming is the Green House Effect, which refers to the trapping of heat by the gases such as carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons, water vapors and fuel particles etc. Green House Effect was first considered into study by S. Arrhenius during the last decade of the 19th century when the scientists first...

...Glacial Retreat Evidence of Global Warming... Glacial Retreat Evidence of Global Warming... It is no doubt that Earth is warming faster than ever before in history. The slowly increasing temperature is however, thought to come about because of the various human activities. Global warming occurs because of the massive greenhouse gases for instance carbon dioxide and methane. Human activities are the main cause of the increase in green house gases. For the last 20 million years, research has it that burning of fuels has tremendously given rise to high carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere. A recent report by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change shows that there is a vivid evidence for 0.6 degrees Celsius increase in global temperatures and...

Section/# Global Warming: An Analysis of Two Opposing Views and the Quest for a Practical Middle Ground One of themost heated environmental debates which has existed for the past 15-20 years within the scientific and political community is with relation to the existence of global warming. The topic itself is hotly contested between both left and right of the political spectrum; between progressives and conservatives and between developing and developed nations. Each of these shareholders has something to gain or to lose based upon their own interpretation and as such this topic has been a particularly messy one to understand and to define. Accordingly,...

Global Warming-Ethics Global Warming-Ethics Introduction Global warming is arguably the most debated environmental issue in the world today. Fern (2003) notes that global warming has been a key concern for everyone including environmentalists, government leaders, corporations, and individuals worldwide. The concern is attributable to its negative impact on the environment. Fern (2003) defines global warming as the increase in the average temperatures of the earth and oceans. According to Goldstein (2009), the world has experienced a significant increase in average temperatures over the past few decades especially in the 21st century. The high increase in...

...Glacial Retreat Evidence of Global Warming... Glacial Retreat Evidence of Global Warming... GLOBAL WARMING Global warming is as a result of increase of earth’s average surface temperature. It occurs when the earth atmosphere is overloaded with heat that traps carbon dioxide, which are emitted from the burning fossil fuel for energy-coal, natural gas, and oil- plus the loss of forests due to deforestation, more especially in the tropics (Global warming,2009). These carbon dioxide and other global warming pollutants continuously collect in the atmosphere forming a thick layer like blanket, it is this layer that do trap the sun’s heat hence causing the planet to warm up. These threaten large-scale change or disruptions in climate pattern,...
