The researcher states that Large animals rescue started about 150 years ago when the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) and the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) started to rescue horses and oxen. Since the beginning of LAR development, new techniques and methods have been designed in order to provide emergency and disaster assistance to large animals. Thus, for example, the Veterinary Emergency Response Team has developed the Anderson Sling – tool, aimed at providing support to the large skeletal structure of the horse.

LAR training with vets started in the 1980s; for the years of practice, TLAER emergency rescue of large animals has developed different techniques and manipulations aimed at rescuing large animals and also designed special tools and devices for various rescue situations. These include rope rescues, strap rescues, glide rescues (developed by SPCA), vertical lift tie, and others. Another impressive thing here is that during the TLAER training very often there are used not mannequins of horses but the real animals.

This practice enables future responders to get more prepared for “real-life situations” and better understand the behavior of large animals. While rescuing a large animal, it is crucial not to become a secondary incident victim because of own foolishness or ignorance. It is necessary to keep in mind that nobody can exactly foresee the exact behavior of an animal in this particular case. Large animals are very calm animals when they feel safe, however, you should not expect that the animal will behave the same way in a dangerous situation.
