Roome substantiates his argument by giving the example of Japan and France, countries that industrialized later, which realized peak at intensity of energy lower than the ones of United States and United Kingdom, which industrialized earlier. He argues that industrialization paths that were less-energy intensive developed as more ways of industrial, transport and domestic technologies on the world markets became available. Roome maintains that countries that industrialized earlier continued using older technologies, which reduced the efficiency of their economies.

He also points out that generalizing developing countries as using less energy and therefore reaching their peaks at lower energy intensities is not right. This is because the energy intensities reached by some developing countries has been very high even to the point exceeding the peaks reached by Japan. Roome suggests that the observations show that wealth and resource use do not have a fixed relationship with the consequent impacts on the environment. This book is going to be useful for this research as it helps to argue against the erroneous sentiments that developing countries use less energy and therefore minimal impacts to the environment.
