Comparison of Boston and Pennsylvania Boston is one of the oldest cities in the United s. Besides being the largest city in Massachusetts, it is the capital city as well. Pennsylvania on the other hand is a state situated in the Great Lakes region in the United States. This paper gives a comparison of the Boston and Pennsylvania with regards to population, composition of the land, average income, lifestyle, protection of the natural biodiversity, environmental pollution and conservation as well.

Demographically, Boston has a population of 617,594 as per the 2010 United States Census. Boston also anchors a large metropolitan area known as the Greater Boston. Thus, the Greater Boston region is a home to 4.5 Million people. The city’s population density is 5,203 people per square mile. On the other hand, basing on the 2010 United States Census, Pennsylvania has a population of is 12,742,886 people (Sapp and Solomon 81-82).With respect to land composition, Palo Alto has a total area of 25.

8 square miles.1.9 square miles is covered by water while 23.9 square miles is covered by land. On the other hand Pennsylvania covers a total of 46,055 square miles of which 1239 is covered by water whereas 44,817 square miles is covered by land.In terms of average income, as determined by the 2000 U.S Census statistics, the average income for the Bolton city is $39,629. The average family income is $44,151. The per capita income of the city is $23,353. In addition, 19.5 percent of the population as well as 15.

3 percent of families live below poverty line. On the other hand, Pennsylvania has a Gross State Product of $570. It has an average per-capita GSP of $39,830.In terms of poverty, 4.8 percent of the population and 3.2 percent of families live below poverty line (Sapp and Solomon 84).With regards to lifestyle, Boston has one of the highest living cots in the United States. It is an international hub for reputable higher educational and medicinal centers. The city has been ranked third in the United States as per livability rankings.

On the other hand, the people in Pennsylvania like mushroom and wine. The quality of life in the state is incredible as well. It is also a religious center with the notable churches being the Roman Catholic and protestant churches.The two cities have taken various initiatives in enhancing a reduction in environmental pollution and promoting environmental conservation. In this purview, it is apparent that Boston has always been in the frontline to ensure environmental conservation. This is bolstered by the Boston Conservation Commission (BCC), which protects and preserves open space and natural areas of the city.

This includes natural parks and wetlands. The Commission is also charged with the mandate of administering the Massachusetts Wetland Act, the Conservation Commission Act as well as the Massachusetts Rivers Protection Act. The commission is credited with the enforcement a myriad of conservation restrictions on various properties and places with Boston. The BCC also owns a variety of natural area and open spaces within the city. Thus, environmental conservation as well protection of the natural biodiversity has always been guaranteed in Boston hence a sustainable city to live.

On the other hand, Pennsylvania has also undertaken various initiatives to ensure environmental conservation. This includes the establishment of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. This department is charged with the responsibility of administering and ensuring adherence to Pennsylvania’s environmental law and regulations. It has put measures in place to ensure a reduction in air water and soil pollution, proper litter disposal and promote the use of advanced energy which is less pollutant.

There is also the Pennsylvania Environmental Council which enhances the protection and restoration of the natural environment. It partners with the government, private sector, communities as well individuals with the quest of improving the quality of life through environmental conservation. Their efforts towards conservation of the environment and protection of the natural biodiversity in Pennsylvania are palpable.
