Dear admission committee, Re: What Matters to Me and Why Values are some of the most important things in our lives. They drive so many of our decisions and even make choices for us that we aren't aware of. I have always been a caring person who has loved his family. That value has led me to the career path I now intend to undertake. Eight years ago my father suffered a serious accident which resulted in both his hands being badly injured. He ended up losing the use of both his hands because the doctor did not treat him correctly at the time of the injury.
If he had received surgery within eight hours of the accident, he would have retained the use of his hands. My father quietly suffered for five months after the injury. He was not able to feed himself or use the restroom by himself. As his oldest son, I was responsible for caring for him. Since that time I learned what I had done for my father would be considered occupational therapy. No one in my family had even heard of an occupational therapist, because we lived in a poor rural area of Pakistan.
In 2004, two years after my father’s accident, my family immigrated to the United States. I was overjoyed to move to America because it would allow me to pursue a career in occupational therapy. After seeing how much my care was able to help my father, I was excited to begin studying to be an occupational therapist. Currently, I am volunteering at Therapy West Occupational Therapy Center where I interact with a variety of autistic kids and explore the Occupational Therapy field. I have learned that to be an occupational therapist, one must be very patient and have a friendly and caring personality.
The patients that I will be caring for will have suffered some sort of traumatic injury or have a debilitating disability and thus may not be in the best of moods. As an occupational therapist, I must be able to encourage my patients to do what he or she can to recover despite the limitations of their injury. I witnessed firsthand the difficulty patients can have when I saw my father lose his ability to perform the role of father and breadwinner for my family. I was able to remain calm and patient because I understood that he was not angry with me but because his injury prevented him from working and living up to the responsibilities of fatherhood.
This was a challenge, but my values saw me through to the other side. I have worked very hard for the last few years to pursue a career as an occupational therapist. I became the first member of my family to graduate from high school in the United States. I will also be the first to acquire an Associates Degree. I plan on attending Dominican University and completing a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy. It has been my dream to become an occupational therapist ever since I saw how much of an impact such an occupational therapist can have on someone’s life.
I am so excited to get into Dominican University so that I am able to represent the college as well as myself in the best possible manner. I am a dedicated, highly motivated, diligent, driven student who consistently strives for the best outcomes in life, work, and school. This is one of the many reasons I have decided to apply to Domincan. I know this is one of the top schools in the country and I also know that I will work hard to be one of your top students. I am devoted to my studies and the steps that I have to take to obtain a future in this field.
I possess the intellectual commitment and compassionate interest to make this a satisfying and successful vocation. I truly want to leave my mark on the world by helping others. I realize this will not be an easy task, but I am a motivated and determined individual. I know my perseverance and diligence will help me to reach my ultimate objective of completing the program successfully. I truly believe that I could be an asset to your university. I am a natural multi-tasker who has the ability to succeed and reach the top in each situation.
I have a wide range of interests and knowledge to contribute to the field of occupational therapy. I can ensure you that you are not making the wrong decision my accepting my letter of admission. I will not only work hard to prove myself worthy of your acceptance but I will work hard to surpass your expectations. I have proven in the past that I care about others and am motivated by an intrinsic desire to help others. Thank you for your consideration
