However, with the passage of time, I came to know more about dentistry after knowledge sharing as well as my pleasant experiences with experts in this field, which aroused my curiosity to choose dentistry as a sacred profession. Indeed, from the lessons, I learned different facets of dentistry and studied the fundamental causes of the public’s negative attitude toward dentistry and plausible ways that may assist in bringing changes. Even though dentistry across the United States is highly advanced and comprehensive, there is still sheer negligence on the part of the public, especially minorities.

For instance, negative portrayal of dentistry (unfortunately) by media and self-created biased stories by those who previously had negative experiences with dentists could be attributed to the growth of fear in the public toward dentistry. I strongly convict that a more appropriate way to resolve this problem is the active promotion of dental education in various institutions. Nevertheless, if people are exposed to dentistry at an early age, they would become more comfortable and familiar with dental procedures and preventions.

On the flip side, I have seen many dental offices where lack of communication between dentist and patients amid overcapacity of patients creates a negative impression. Indeed, minority patients (non-native speakers) are disadvantaged because of language barriers as they are unable to effectively discuss their problems in the minimum possible time. This, in turn, aggravates the situation and stimulates apprehension among patients toward dentists. All in all, it is my conviction that I possess certain attributes to promote diversity in the UWSoD and to positively influence others to think critically and creatively in endorsing the idea of dental care in our community for greater societal well-being.
