Personal Narrative Essay Introduction This work is done to address the past events that have worked to determine who I am today. I am a currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Finance a field that I have always wanted to be in since my childhood days. It has taken me many years of hard work and extreme sacrifice to ensure that I stand to achieve one of my hard fought dreams of becoming a finance graduate. Learning is an inclusive process that requires one to have clear strategies so that the main goals which should be set in advance are achieved in the stipulated time periods. Achieving the set goals gives one the power to work harder as it has been in my case. Essay Plan This work addresses my personal experiences in stages so that the main concept is covered well. It involves addressing my earlier age and the factors that led me to choose the current career. It also covers the challenges I have overcome and what I have learnt from them. I have also seen it important to address the life lessons that I have learnt as no goal can be achieved without making of sacrifices. Sacrifices makes one stronger and so in the end, when one has achieved the set goals you can reflect and see where you needed to change or make a different choice. Setting Goals and Working to achieve them. Since my childhood days my parents and teachers always made their long lectures and advice oriented curses that reminded me that I had to work hard to make something better of my life. I was told to always work hard in class and with the regular checking of my school books, I knew that failing was never an option. I therefore made it a culture since my earlier days to walk that extra mile to ensure that I got what I needed. I set many goals most of which I did not achieve. However my teachers always used one quote that could give us hope and the will power to start again, the quote said, ‘if plan A fails, remember the alphabet has 26 letters.’ This meant that failing in the first attempt did not mean that all was wrong, it only meant that the strategies I had laid in that attempt could not work and so I needed to revisit the whole procedure. It is common to lose hope at one point of life or the other. This has also been part of my life. When I set a number of goals and failed in majority of them, I started reconsidering setting lower goals that I would achieve without straining a lot. This seemed cool and I would have opted for it. However, the same teachers were there to remind my class that if the journey gets tough only the toughest make to the end. This started ringing in my mind and whenever I contemplated defeat, I would reconsider that by trying that last attempt. Remember every last attempt is the last. If you succeed in the first attempt then that serves as the first and the last attempt. If the first attempt fails, then the consecutive attempts will serve as the last one till success comes knocking. That has been my theme in life, no attempt is ever late, I work hard to achieve and settle for nothing short of what I set my eyes on. If it gets tough to keep going then I improvise another plan that will serve to ease things up and get the same results through whichever means. Thanks to my vector classes that introduced to me the concept that the distance between two points is the same no matter which route one uses. Career Choice My parents wanted me to pursue a career in engineering or medicine which were the highest trending career opportunities at the time. They always gave a list of examples of those people who had followed the path and made great things from their opportunities. I do not remember them telling me of the many who lost it in the way due to following courses that was not their primary choice. I credit my current goals to my primary six teacher who after evaluating my performance in class called me and asked me what I wanted to pursue in future. Fearing that he could have conversed with my parents, I chipped in first and said hesitantly that I wanted to be a doctor or an engineer. He just made a sly grin then gave a long sigh. He could have swallowed me in his own thoughts as I did not hear him ask his next question. I heard asking me why I wanted to be a doctor. Without fear I said that the reason was that my parents wanted me to be that. They had the final decision in it and so I did not see myself in a position to change it in any way. I left the teacher and went away heavily burdened by the fact that I could not choose what I wanted with my life. I knew that science had always been a problem to me and no matter what effort I put I still could not avoid the fact that it was never my favorite. On the contrary I had grown a passion for business, I could execute the business and commercial arithmetic problems with much ease that my friends could be left wondering how I came to fail in the other disciplines taught in school. My growing interest in business was boosted by the caring teacher who was teaching us in that field. He was quick to understand ones’ problem and using his personalized strategies aimed at addressing the individual students’ concerns, he was able to deliver the content in a way that any other teacher could not. This totally changed my mind and I knew that I would pursue a different field, far from what was expected of me but good enough to make me live a dream, of what I yearned to be. Achievements Breaking the news to my highly expecting parents that I was not willing to take any of the choices that they had set for me was one of the greatest achievements I ever made in life. I had always tried and even dreamt doing it but when I set the stage to do it, my courage would ooze away and I could find my tongue strolling into a different topic just to leave me cursing myself for wasting another chance that would have worked to set my soul free and let me pursue what I wanted. The opportunity came in a way I did not expect. One day my father was balancing his business equations as he always liked doing in the evening while waiting for supper to be served. He realized how keen I was and so to push me away or distract my growing interest, he gave me the previous day’s sums to work on, oblivious of the fact that I was aware of the methods that would be used to get the days profit and establish whether the business was running on a loss or a profit. Within a couple of minutes, I had done that and luckily I had gotten it right. This is when he asked me how I got to know that and shaking I told him that I wanted to pursue a career in finance or economics. The moment that followed can only be explained as a nightmare as I expected him to blurter out angrily. However, he calmly said that he will think it over. Come the following day and he called me at the sitting room. He told me in front of my mother that they were ready to support me in any possible way to see that I realize my dream. I felt exceptionally jovial. I never expected it to be that simple. I think I would have said it long time before that. However, that served as a great eye opener to me. I realized that we always limit our world by the worries and concerns of the unknown. Overcoming that was one great step to who I am today. I was now free like the wind, to fight to the last drop, I was now the only barrier to my dreams. I had to work, harder than before, to prove to the world and to myself that I was worth to be in the struggle. My life today When I look back at the way I have come to be at the University and pursuing my dream course I realize that life has taught me many lessons. The first lesson is to be honest with oneself. One cannot always live a lie or in a cocoon. There comes a time when one has to shed all the fears in the world and address life as it is. Define what you want to be and then move to get to that coveted dream. Challenges are part of life, they are the ones that give life a taste. They have served to make me a stronger person. I never cow at the first attempt and I face challenges with a renewed will to succeed when they come. It is also good to heed advice. Even the dull have their say and they know a thing I could be oblivious of. Life is incomplete without interacting. My small yet big world has been defined by the people I have been close to. The good friends helped me in my worries and the bad friends helped me to know the kind of people I would not like to interact with in the future. They have all played an important role in my life. It is always good to give others a reason to live. When a friend is in distress, a word of hope can serve to brighten their day and their life would not be the same again. When am free I like socializing and giving hope to the less privileged. It is my role in the society and I pride in seeing a hopeful face and knowing that I participated in achieving it. Conclusion Though life is never straight, I have overcome many challenges to be where I am today. It’s through this challenges that I can focus back and appreciate the position I am today. I wish to pass this to other people to read and maybe get a point that will give them a reason to try one more time, and maybe achieve that one dream that they have always fought to achieve.
