Compare and contrast the Articles “The Plastic Problem” and “Helping Mother Nature” It is important to that the two articles share several similarities. The two articles talk about the impacts of anthropogenic contributions to the environment. This is in line with alteration and modification of nature. Pollution is one of the anthropogenic issues of global concern. This is because pollution leads to degradation of the environment. Plastic pollution has been termed one of the problems affecting the environment.
This is because plastics are non-biodegradable, thus may lead to prolonged negative impacts to nature. Genetic engineering is also of global concern. The modification of genes of plants has been termed one of the greatest achievements in the field of scientific research. However, the effects of genetic engineering to the people who consume such products have not been scientifically proven (Article 1). This introduces another similarity between the two articles. They both have a lack of full understanding of the impacts that consumption of such products may have in the lives of the organisms.
Science holds that when the plastics are in the ocean, small fishes fee on them. However, the effects that consumption of such small plastics may have in the lives of such fish are not fully known by the scientists. However, it is known that plastics contain toxic substances and in some instances, animals can mistake plastics for food. On the same note, researchers know that consumption of genetically engineered organisms can have some effects in the lives of human beings. However, the real effects that consumption of such genetically engineered organisms are not known (Article 2).
Scientists also know that the genetically modified organisms also result to improved production. Both focus on the alteration of the composition of nature. Plastics have toxic substances. Introduction of these plastic particles and objects into oceans leads to introduction of such toxic substances into the oceans. This leads to alteration of the composition of the oceans. Following the alteration of the composition of the ocean, several aquatic organisms are directly affected. The change in composition of the oceans is associated with increased deaths of fish and other organisms.
This follows that alteration of the oceanic composition leads to unfavorable conditions to the aquatic organisms. On the same note, the article, “Helping Mother Nature” also focuses on the alteration of the composition of nature. Introduction of alien genes to other plants leads to modification of the genetic makeup of the receiving plant. The introduction of such genes into other plants alters the normal genetic functioning of these crops. The introduced genes suppress the expression of the natural genes from that plant.
The introduced genes are always superior to the initial genes contained within the plant. As such, the superior genes introduced leads to alteration of the productivity of such plants. However, consumption of such plants may be associated with several complications to the lives of human beings. However, the effects of such genetically modified organisms have not been scientifically proven.Despite the similarities, it is important to note that the two articles differ in several instances. One of these differences is evident in their long-term impacts.
Plastics are associated with pollution of the oceans thereby leading to environmental degradation in the long run. This is likely to affect the lives of aquatic organisms. On the other hand, “Helping Mother Nature” talks about genetic engineering. This is attributed to increased production of the crops in the long run. This is associated to improved food production that may help alienate the problem of world food security. As such, it is important to note that the first article, “The Plastic Problem”, talks about negative impacts at the long run.
However, the second article, “Helping Mother Nature”, talks about positive impacts in the long run. The second difference evident between these two articles focuses on the type of the environment in question. The article “The Plastic Problem” focuses on the anthropogenic effects in aquatic environment. On the other hand, the article “Helping Mother Nature” talks about the effects of anthropogenic contributions in the terrestrial environment.Works CitedArticle 1 & 2.doc.
