Freedom is intended as a challenge As a feminist and social critic, Naomi Wolf has written many books and articles including Freedom Is Intended as a Challenge. In this article, she attempts to explain the reason why young Americans ought to continue with the fight for Declaration of Independence. Her audience is the American youths whom, she wants to embrace, maintain, and support liberty and shun injustices at whatever cost. Initially, I was skeptical on this issue with regard to the cause and purpose for such activism.

However, after reading the article, I finally became convinced on the importance and need to heed to the idea of the writer since it is for the benefit of every American. Wolf’s claimsFirst, she claims that happiness entails a personal satisfaction that stops with an individual, and even personal pleasure and joy (Wolf 633). Secondly, she argues that the majority of Americans have a differing interpretation of Declaration of Independence; could mean just pleasures of shopping and team sports.

Moreover, she points out that Jefferson and other founders of America consider happiness “as a fortunate state of enfranchisement in the context of an open, just society.” (Wolf 633). The argument was derived from Greeks who considered happiness as the exercise of vital powers along lines of excellence in a life affording them scope.” (Wolf 633). For instance, Jefferson argues that Americans can achieve happiness in that they can rectify or amend their constitution whenever necessary thereby, being able to secure the happiness of Americans.

Wolf supports Jefferson’s interpretation of “happiness in the context of honesty, kindness, and respect for others’ personal and religious freedoms” (Wolf 633). Therefore, Wolf supports various viewpoints including Jefferson’s ideas concerning the Declaration of Independence. Her claims are based on policies of government established by the people. The people, therefore have a duty to destroy the government in case it attempts to “destroy the goals of life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness” (Wolf 634).

Afterwards, they can create a government that guarantees safety and good fortune. EvidencesShe concedes that Americans should champion for liberty by acknowledging and supporting Thomas Jefferson’s stance on Declaration of Independence which, recognizes the existence of certain unalienable human rights including “Life, Liberty, as well as Pursuit of Happiness”(Wolf 632). Such rights should be guarded by a government established by the people and failure to which, the people can “alter or abolish it for their future security” (Wolf 632).

She suggest that the Declaration of Independence studied in school is lifeless and lacks connection and reality among Americans. However, she challenges all “Americans to make personal sacrifices for the cause of freedom” (Wolf 631). Wolf uses the evidence through logos to present her case and support her reasoning on the need for Americans to uphold the Declaration of Independence with high esteem. First, in supporting the Declaration of Independence, Americans have a duty to continually rebel against the oppressors of their liberty and rights (Wolf 632).

Just as she states in the article, I also support that such change or removal of government should be done in a cautious manner and not based on superficial reasons or response to difficult circumstances. Overall conclusions:Americans therefore have a sacred obligation to take the most serious initiatives and endure various forms of personal risks in defense of the freedom as it is one’s natural right (Wolf 634). They should rise against those who plan to conquer them and deny them their liberty through Declaration of Independence.

Thus, every Fourth of July, Americans should remember that they inherited “a sworn duty to rebel and oppose injustice” (Wolf 635).Therefore, such event should ensure that Americans rebel against certain ills in the society such as passage of laws that harm citizens including over taxation caused by lack of proper representation, illegal spying of citizens by the state. Through this, the nation will continue reaping the benefits of Declaration of Independence. However, failure to do that will lead to weaknesses of the system such as bad policies, high taxes, and thus suffering of Americans due to ignorance.
