In this poem, the author calls people to accept life fully and do not waste time on useless things. The poem touches the universal issues, concerning the path of the person during his life. In general the plot has an optimistic and positive expression. The poem satisfies the genre by using various stylistic devices in order to strengthen the effect of writing. “The laughing heart” is written in blank verse, which expresses the spirit of freedom revealed in the sense of the importance of life.
The author used a number of figurative devices in the poem. For example, “your life is your life…your life is your life” is a case of parallelism. By this device, the author highlights that every person should appreciate the moments of life and use them in the way one would not regret at the end of it. Using the metaphoric phrase “clubbed into dank submission”, the author strengthens the effect of the first line, using rather expressive words to show negative effect of being unable to control one’s own life. Moreover, the first line of the poem, “your life is your life” targets the reader and addresses him/her directly and personally due to use of the second person: “your”. The second case is the tone of the piece: the poem in general is filled with hope and faith in improvements of life. The author encourages us to take all the chances “gods” will offer us. However, Bukowski seems to avoid direct religious allusion deliberately: he only uses the word “gods”, which hints at universality of the divine forces. The third device is the symbols, where “light” is associated with hope and is supposed to “beat the darkness”, i.e. loneliness and despair.
