Consequently, the country has been forced to introduce mechanisms for sorting out trash into different categories, such that most of the trash is recycled, and only a small percentage of it is disposed, mostly through incineration (Onishi, n.p). Thus, in “Japan, up to 80 percent of garbage is incinerated, while a similar percentage ends up in landfills in the United States” (Onishi, n.p). At this point, it becomes important ponder over the question: if Japan has fallen short of land such that it exports its trash for disposal in the United States landfills, what is likely to happen in the future, if the trash being produced globally is not minimized?

The global population continues to grow by the day, and the world has recently hit the seven billion mark. However, the world is not expanding as the population expands, and thus essential resources, most especially land, continues to become scarce as more population is added to the global statistics (USDA.gov, n.p.). Consequently, if the scarcity of land globally is to be mitigated effectively, then there must be a drastic reduction in the trash produced, which will in turn reduce the need for dumpsites.

This will effectively create more usable land for accommodating the growing population. Thus, more than ever before, there is a great need for the world to take the path that has been charted by Japan, and start reducing the amount of trash that is produced. However, while this is a noble course, it will have little impact, if the society is not fully educated and implored into buying the ideas of trash reduction (NEEF, n.p.). Thus, education becomes a very important tool through which the objective for reducing the trash produced globally can be achieved.
