Mumias Speech Part I: a. Summarize the main points of Mumias speech Legalized Crime. Mumias speech centered on theinherent culture of the Goddard College and the need to come out of the institution more prepared to face the challenges of the world. To Mumias point, explain why you think police corruption and/or police violence are so common in the U.S. Explain in detail. Police violence in the US can be explained from a number of perspectives. The police disregard the law and act with impunity to a greater extent. The police employ violence as a means of inserting bodily harm and making the people submit to their will. The police continue with their brutality because even on occasions that they have committed crimes and violence against the people they have been acquited by the juries. Mumias speech demonstrates deprivation and social injustices that are inherent in the society. It is important to note that the functionality of the society depends on how various institutions work together to ensure stability. Living in a death row is the epitome of Panopticon in the sense that there is not way to the situation except for death.

The main points of the Mumias speech are centered on the criminal justice system that is flawed to a greater extent. In his speech, Mumia notes that the justice system is discriminatory and characterized by racial stereotyping. On the other hand, Mumia addresses the issue of police brutality and capital punishment and issue that is inherently critical for the peoples well being.
Mumia also notes that the people have no freedom to express their thoughts or opinion because of prosecution and notes that such tendencies are detrimental to the peoples rights. c. What issues or concerns does Mumia raise about the U.S.s penal system? Explain in detail. One of the issues that Mumia raises is the issue of racism. He notes that the criminal justice system does not apply the law with equality. Prejudice and racial stereotyping defines the justice system. Consequently, Mumia raises the issue of capital punishment that has ensured police violence on the people.
As a result of police brutality, the people have been abused in terms of physical assault. Suppression and prosecution of people with a contrary opinion on how the government operates and the functionality of institutions in the American society. d. Do you think Mumia has good reason to be concerned about the issues he raises with the U.S. penal system? Mumia has good reason to be concerned about the penal system. Case in point is that there some tendencies of discrimination in its application.
The criminal justice system does not seem to adhere to the moral issues of the law, but goes outside the stipulated law to define and pass judgement on the people. Essentially, only a few people benefit from the system of the law, but a majority especially due to racial stereotyping. e. Share your thoughts, feelings, impressions of Mumias speech. Mumia demonstrates his frustration with a society that looks okay from the outside, but the reform system does not ensure justice. Mumias speech is an illustration of a society that is confounded on pretense and deceit.
Case in point is that the society has structured systems, but they do not work in favor of the people. The institutions are characterized by injustices and the ruling class do not take into consideration the plight of the people.
