Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) By Lecturer’s and ETFs were first launched in Canada in 1990, originally to create shares portfolios replicating stock market indices. Their numbers have since swelled, dramatically spreading into equities and bonds of varying maturities and with designs to appeal to various interest groups. It is feared however that the various ETF designs might go out of control.
Newer ETFs are less diversified and more expensive. An increasing worry has also caught the concern of international bodies. Lack of liquidity and leveraging are some of ETFs’ risks, with the biggest concern being about “synthetic” ETFs and linked products. Providers thus require banks to provide collateral.
Around a half of Europe’s ETF sector by assets consists of synthetic funds. However, inability of synthetic ETFs to eliminate illiquidity risk is a big concern and could go wrong. Management fee has always eaten into investors’ returns contrary to what ETFs were launched to achieve.
