Download file to see previous pages Barack Obama begins his campaign address at the University of Iowa by dropping the names of some famous local politicians like Congressman Dave Loebsack, Mayor Matt Hayek and Attorney General Tom Miller to make people open up to what he is going to say, without thinking much (Obama 1).
In this speech one could also clearly see that Obama is also using a propaganda strategy Cross called Plain-Folks appeal. He is addressing the audience at the University of Iowa as if they are familiar to him and he is one of them. He calls them “Hawkeyes” By doing so Barack Obama is here trying to get the support and trust of the people by showing himself as one of them.
In this speech Barack Obama is also using another important propaganda technique referred to by Cross as Transfer. He is trying to associate the positive ideas linked to a different situation or person to collect support from his audience in Iowa (Cross 213). For instance he mentions the support extended to him by people in Charlotte, North Carolina to make his audience in Iowa think that he deserves their support. As expected, the audience in Iowa responds with cheer and applause. He is also linking President Clinton to his policies in the speech, to divert the audience’s attention from the weaknesses in his policies, by making them recall the successful tenure of President Clinton.
Barack Obama is also using the technique Glittering Generalities. In his speech he is using the words and ideas like the “interests of the middle class families and small businesses”, “giving the Americans a chance”, “the American Dream”, which tend to be very broad and open to multiple interpretations.
