This book is an unusual story of a slave who escapes the struggle with a secret plans. In order to understand Jacob’s story first we should understand what is to be a woman in South during those times. Slaves were considers as a property and female slaves were violated constantly without any right to raise voice. In the story, Jacob describes her master, Mr.; Flint who treated her saying that she should obey his command and need to surrender to him being a slave. The author depicts through the novel that women in South in early days were mere property to be sold and bought. By explaining the life story of Linda, Jacob wanted to show Northern that slaves, especially women, aren’t property to be bought, sold or mistreated.
Her book is not an ordinary tale by any standards as she did not literally fight for her freedom but bought it through struggle. She ends up in affair with white man and has two children but gets no true love from her lover Mr. Sands for herself or for her children. The story entails that when white women were aware of the sexual suffering the black women had to undergo all the pain and struggle of sexual exploitation. They had to pledge their motherhood and woman hood among the white members of the society.
The story of Linda had the ability to strike out to the world the hearts and mothering nature of thee black women who were slaves. The book has some themes like freedom; pain self – expression and resistance... The book is targeted at a specific audience which is white woman of North and speaks on account of black women in bondage.
