Extract of sample "Violent Media and Kids Perception"

My ethos is that I have already started on the topic of the short and long-term effects of violent media on children. I believe that though some studies also showed that violent media can have a bad impact on the sociability and aggression of adolescents and adults alike, these effects came more from their childhood experiences of violent media. Adults can understand what is wrong and right, so they can better understand the harmful effects of violence and know that violent media is unreal. Children, however, are different because they are not yet mentally and emotionally mature. Violent media can have serious effects on their perceptions of violence, as well as attitudes and actions toward violence.

• What’s your pathos?
My pathos is that I believe that when we fail to protect the healthy development of the minds and emotions of our children, we are also forsaking the development of a peaceful and rational society. If violent media is bad for kids, then kids must not play them at all or be exposed to them, including marketing tools that sell violent media.
2. Why do people need to know about your topic?
People need to know about the topic because they should be convinced that violent media is bad for kids.
• What do they need to know?

They need to know why violent media is bad for kids by understanding how violent media shapes their perceptions and behaviors.
3. What’s your research question? Why is violent media bad for kids?
4. What’s your thesis? Violent media is bad for kids because it has significant short-term and long-term effects on children’s development of aggressive thoughts, emotions, and actions, regardless of gender, socioeconomic status, intelligence, and parenting styles and characteristics.
5. Who, specifically, is your audience? My audiences are parents and adults.

• What is their demographic? They include lower and middle-class but are educated enough to understand basic English. They can appreciate evidence from studies but need emotional appeals too.
• How are you going to talk to them? I will talk to them by giving studies and examples as evidence. I will also engage them in formal language.
• What information do they need and why? They need to know why violent media is bad for kids using logic and evidence because they need convincing on why violent media can affect the thinking and behaviors of their kids.

6. What research do you have? I have empirical research.
• How much or how little are you going to use that/those source(s)? I am going to use them all but I also need contradicting research or studies and anecdotes that oppose them, so that I can respond to these research and ideas and prove that my position is more convincing than theirs.
7. What research do you need to do? I need more research that contradicts my thesis and that also supports my claims.
8. What points do you need to make to support your thesis? I need to support my thesis by showing that violent media can change or affect how kids think and act as individuals and toward each other.

9. In what order do your points need to occur that will make the most sense and support your argument the best?
I will start with my weakest argument and end with my strongest argument.
10. How can you make your audience want to know about your topic?
I will make them want to know about my topic by citing examples of violent media effects on children as part of the introduction. Read More
