His other works include two marriages, two poetry collections: The Eyes Don’t Always Want to Stay Open, the Daily Round, and a memoir of his experience in teaching, Being With children.
Lopate is the editor of several anthologies. Apart from The Art of Personal Essay: An Anthology from the classical Era to the Present, Lopate edited Journal of Living Experience, Writing New York, American movie critics among many other articles. Lopate is a professor and Nonfiction Director of The Art of Personal Essay: An Anthology from the classical Era to the Present. Lopate is an Architect, and has served as a committee member at The Municipal Art Society. In addition, he is a media critic who has written many articles attacking American movies. He has received many awards and fellowships such as John Simon Guggenheim Fellowship award; he received honorable recognition from the Municipal Art Society's Brendan Gill Award. He is also a member of the American Art Designs.
In the essay An Art Personal Essay, Lopate provides a fertile ground for the anthology. He presents seventy-five essays displaying in depth, creativity, and creative writing.
