David the father of both Rose and Violet was a kind sad man, in Violet’s words. David was also a psychiatrist who failed to notice his daughter’s symptoms of mental illness. He cared for his wife as well as his daughter but never outwardly showed similar emotional attachment to Rose of which his wife did; this is evident from his words when the wife tried to warn of the commencement of Rose’s mental illness: “I’m sorry; I didn’t mean to snap at you. I know something’s bothering her. Have you talked to her?” (Beyondthecouch 2). David never had the ability to calm Rose down according to Violet. David spoke in practical terms of how it was not possible to care for Rose after the death of Dr. Thorne and how he was the one that shouldered the responsibility concerning the arrangements after the suicide of Rose. On the other hand, Galen the mother of Rose and Violet was a musician that was regarded by the towns’ people as eccentric and she being a mother who first noticed that her daughter Rose was suffering a mental illness.
The illness theme, exact mental illness and how everyone is affected by it, is one of the most significant themes in Silver water. Upon the first schizophrenic breakdown of Rose at age fifteen, her life was virtually controlled by the illness, and as the story points out, it took over the lives of her family members. The illness was viewed as a problem of the family, with Violet dreading a similar episode to happen to her, but her mother consoled her “It won’t happen to you, honey. Some people go crazy, and some people never do. You never will.” (beyondthecouch 2).
