It focuses on the challenges faced by six young German soldiers. It begins by providing background information of the war by describing the scenario behind the German lines, specifically at the Western Front during the period of World War I. The author also goes ahead and provides information in regard to the food surplus at the Western Front behind the German lines. A brief scenario of the conditions at the hospital where wounded soldiers are treated is also discussed. This is imperative aspect of beginning a novel as discussed by the author.
The narrator of the book also use proper descriptive language to describe certain characters such as Kat, a forty year old leaders that highly respected by many of the young soldiers. The author describes him as a person of proper instincts and full of guts. He is contrasted to one of the leader, who was a former postman, Mr. Himmelstoss, basically described as a coward (Remarque, 12). The use of contrast in this sense is imperative due to the fact the fact that it gives readers a picture of the characters hence increasing their understanding of the novel. However, it appears that there too much use of descriptive language in the book as most of the chapters describes the scenarios that occurred in the battle field.

Additionally, the second chapter of the book focuses on the mental process that goes on Paul’s mind as he thinks about a play he was writing. This is a piece of information that one would argue was used to provide a general idea of what most soldiers ...Download file to see next pagesRead More

Critique of AQWF
The novel narrates the lives of soldiers, especially the German soldiers, during World War I. instead of offering a depiction of some heroic actions; the novel provides a realistic picture of how the war shatters the lives of soldiers. In addition, it portrays how the mainstream society fails to understand this extreme mental and physical agony and isolation felt by soldiers and how worthless the lives of soldiers who face death in the warfront become when extreme nationalism takes over the minds of people.
