Response I These three articles A&P by John Updike, At a glance by Sherman Alexie and Hills like White Elephants by Ernest Hemingway had similar theme of broken relationship. A&P spoke of Sammy’s intention to severe his employment with the store after Lengel, the store manager chastised the girls who entered their store in their bathing suit. “Hills Like White Elephants” on the other hand was about a couple where the man pressures the girl to get an abortion as his condition to marriage of which of course the girl protested.
It was not mentioned in the story but the coldness of the girl when asked how she felt and she answered coldly. Finally, Sherman Alexie’s “At a glance” was about Victor’s estranged relationship with his father. The conflicts begun when the characters in authority acted less than what was expected of them. In the couple, the guy wanted an abortion for his pregnant girlfriend to her disgust. Victor’s father was never around while the store manager was less than considerate to girls which Sammy has intentions.
Response II These three poems were really just about profession and work. Paul Whitman spoke about the wonder and complexity of the job of astronomer with its “proofs and figures” that he had difficulty understanding. Marge Pierce spoke of “The Secretary Chant” which is really just an enumeration of the things that are on office table and how to use them. Finally, John Keat’s ballad “when I have fears that I may ceased to be” spoke of the writer’s anxiety that his work may not be appreciated.
