Download file to see previous pages His prose was kept unadorned and direct by employing a certain method he referred to as the “iceberg principle” (Kramer, 1).
Hemingway was a master of dialogue. His character’s conversations demonstrate not only limits but also communication. The way his characters speak sometimes has more significance than what they are saying. Thus, his style is based on not including extraneous words and information. This results in prose which is lean, straightforward, and seemingly spare, deriving its meaning and power from what is not said explicitly. Through simplistic writing, and inclusion of other deeper meanings, his themes of writing are impacted in a way unique way unlike other author’s. Hemingway’s themes are ideas that are known to everyone, and are lessons for everyone to learn. Since Hemingway does not reveal his themes openly in his writing, the reader easily remembers them after he/she comprehends them. Also, Hemingway’s simple writing reflects the themes since they are not complex at all. They are basic ideas yet very powerful (Kramer, 1).
William Faulkner was an innovative writer, renowned for his style of experimental writing with meticulous analysis of the diction, utterance and cadence and meticulous attention to the detail of his characters’ state of minds and utterances. He intelligently experimented with switching different voices and perspectives, including those of the outcast, children, the illiterate, and the insane. Moreover, Faulkner is talented with arranging of narrative chronology, with sometimes breaking a time frame and the re-combining it in a whole new aspect. He has a brilliant and rich baroque style of writing characterized by developed and extremely long sentences, which embed with complex subordinate parts (Fulton, 1).
